|
|
Background 97-8500 about 400 hrs on tubes, upgraded to hd-144 lenses (nice upgrade), installed moome hdmi w gamma (nice upgrade), installed 03 vim (nice upgrade). This is projecting on to a 92" Stewart videomatt 200 screen. Room is totally light controlled with black GOM on walls which really helps with room reflections. I only run 1080p from Sony S550.
So I had time to install a set of MP modded cards (neck cards, vertical, 03 modded vim supers to microns?). I did not touch my magnetic alignment.
I did a full reset and redid convergence before geometry, I then slipped in Casino Royal expecting a nice little upgrade.
Holy Shiiiiit Batman!!! I just got a light cannon, I'm looking for the contrast setting....still at 50, looking for brightness... still at 42. The dynamic range has a huge increase, the colors look more natural (especially fleshtones), colors of walls etc have changed slightly to look more real, imperfections in walls etc stand out more, the image takes on an even more 3D look, scenes that did not look so 3D before look more so now. These are all things that just hit me right away, as I have only watched about 3 hrs of frequently viewed Blu Rays to this point. I feel some of the differences are hard to quantify as they are subtle, but add to the overall image improvement. I just keep thinking I got a new projector.
Now on a side note:
Not sure if the mods had any part in this or if it was the convergence before geometry. I have always had a very slight banding problem only on very light scenes...now gone. On short retrace I have always had very slight jailbars on the left side of screen...gone as well. I had only used 3 clicks of bow in the past but used non this time, and this may have helped. The overall pic is without a doubt the best it has ever been and it has been very good and quite 3d in the past with the exceptions listed just previous.
I still have a full set of 9" lc tubes, frankenyokes, and hd10f lenses from a g90 waiting to go in, but wanted to see these on their own. They did not disappoint. I will try to take some screen shots with my POS camera, but I cannot see it conveying the image I am seeing on screen accurately.

A nice review, On the convergence before geometry, that alone helps out the image a lot with banding, its my way of doing it as well.
Mikes mods lower the noise floor of the entire board set dramatically allowing the line drawing/scanning placement, stability of each scan lines(less or no oscillation of the lines) and back ground noise reduction( more true color and back ground detail enhancement) to improve the over all image. As a result higher scan rates can be used as well as higher contrast .
I would love two set's some day. In time I will.
We have not seen the one on one off pattern from users i don't think, that be a nice pic for us to see. I would redo the CPC magnets one time after also as you might now be able to see a difference now with the new boards, i bet things will get better yet.

MP mods have always been excellent but it also has a certain vaporware aspect to it, i.e. very heard to get. Hopefully Curt can start offering them again. Also, in regards to the VIM, there's a possibility brand new boards could be made in China for a lower cost than re-soldering the 12 year old stuff out there now.

I'm guessing that is why he said "I would love TWO set's some day"

Yes, Curt will be doing the mods from now on. I've already sent him part of what's needed to get started, and have been putting together everything else. I'll be shipping these things to him with some other stuff sometime soon.
I'll then move on to support and help in making this happen.
I am not the person to contact for purchasing the Marquee mods.
Athanasios, maybe we should get a Mikron Vim to you to play with. I'll see what I can do, I have a few here that's almost finished.
I can also send one to Alan to play with.
Nice write-up..

Remember, I also came up with a mod for Ampros. Though some may not agree, to me it would be the best way to improve the image on Ampro's, but you're going to need more than caps, IC's and other small components. This one is free, so I'll post it for anyone interested in improving an Ampro:
Remove the top cover from your Ampro and remove everything insides.....once done, replace the insides with a marquee and then put the cover back on.

Mike I have a really old 03P VIM with your first generation mods, like 5 years old. What would be the best way to bring it up more modern standards, wait for Curt or?
