Hi all -- ITS ALIVE.
Having finally surmounted my VDM problem, I installed my 9" tubes along with my '03 VIM and Ultra CLM and it works!! I know I should act like this is no big thing and I was always confident it would be ok and whatnot, but I was pretty happy to hear the "whoosh" for the first time with all the new stuff installed.
Anyway, I'm messing around with Bill Blue's fabulous setup guide and fumbling my way through setup from scratch and I'm pleased to find that the 9" tubes I got off fleebay are in very nice shape.
I have a question. Is there a way to update the Guided Mechanical Setup tutorial? The one I have now doesn't correspond to my equipment. It would also be really cool if I could update the model number that comes up to say 9500LC. Anybody messed with this stuff?

You'd have to replace your upper mother board, or backplane, I can't remember what its called, but its the one that stands up vertically underneath the tubes, with the little chip on it...
You can change the displayed model using the super secret service passcode, but you can't change the "Help" guide that way(but I'm not sure they're even different from model to model...).

And how, pray tell, does one obtain the super secret passcode?

Just ask, I'm sure one of us blabbermouths will look it up and tell you...It's been posted before on the internet, so its not really as secret as you'd think...
If I remember, I'll search through "My Documents" and see if I can find it...(but I'm sure someone else will let you know before I can find it...).

Ohmess, so what was the final parts list for the resurrection?

Well first we took a brand new 8500 Ultra. Then we very carefully removed everything from the chassis and replaced it with AmPro parts

Hello
What steps specifically do not correspond?

The description of the lens flapping adjustments doesn't correspond to adjustments on the the 9500 LC lens housings.

Well, surmounted is probably a little too grand a word for what I actually did. As you know, I did the resistors, caps and four of the TLE2074s. I then went to swap out the mylar caps with WIMAs and did not notice the resistor under R46 when doing so (it was tucked up way underneath). I fired up the projector without the 75k ohm that was supposed to be under R46, and thats when my troubles began.
I replaced the resistor, but then observed some very odd behavior, which I posted a picture of in the Marquee Maintenance thread. I swapped back the TL084 at U12, and my picture got worse. I went over a bunch of individual components, and thought I had identified the problem at Q2 and Q3. I replaced these, hooked it all back up and still no change in the picture. I replaced U12 with a brand new TLE2074, no change in the picture. I then went over a bunch of components again, replaced a resistor and a diode (forgot the numbers), and again no change in the picture weirdness. This time, during the course of checking various connections, pulling the LVPS and reseating, etc., I heard a pop and the picture on my green tube changed so that the grid was not only out of place vertically, it was squeezed horizontally to about 1/3 the size of the other two. I smelled slight burning that I tracked to the HDM. So, I decided to set aside the VDM with all the mods, and put in a virgin one, along with a replacement HDM (I had not done nearly as many changes on my HDM as you did in your thread, so this was not a big deal).
Part of my thought process in changing gears was that my lenses arrived and I was able to line up help to actually put the 9" tubes I bought into the projector, and I thought it would be cool to get these in and setup. So I bought another VDM ($50).
l plan to return to the modified VDM, but I fear I may have been a little too clumsy in the U12 changes and may have damaged the board. My next step will be to check the various connections to and from U12 through the PCB to see if I pulled a trace. These were my first attempts at changing a through mounted chip (I managed the surface mounted ones on the neck boards fine), and I had some trouble with it.
My test bed is still in Chicago; I found a working 8500 at a relatively good price but the seller would not ship, so I picked it up and one of my buddies has it at his place. I'm going to get the test bed up and running before doing more board level modifications.
And, of course, I have the process of learning mechanical setup to keep me occupied for a while.
