Guys was wondering if I could have some help. I'm about to do my first setup of the BG1209s, in Kals post http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco_Setup_Quick_Reference_Guide.shtm there are two inital adjustments.
(1) Check the 17 volt rail with a meter. Adjust if needed (see service manual). Make sure that you use a video line frequency 15.6/15.7 or an internal pattern, also your H-width setting must be at 49 when you do this.
What value am I supposed to be adjusting to? I've got the service manuals, but cannot locate the adjustment information, can anyone point me to the page, or walk me through the adustment required. I remember reading somewhere that the 1209s has a slightly different voltage than the other Barco's
(1a) Check the 48V pot on the SMPS (see service manual).
Again, Kals guide says 'check', am I just adjusting via the service manual?
(1b) Check the horiz linearity pot on the horiz defl board (see service manual).
I find the Barco service manual challenging to read, it's obviously a technical document, aimed squarely at Barco techs or other suitably qualified peeps.
What I'm really chasing is a more detailed description of these first three inital power adjustment, as I believe they have a large effect on the overall setup, and I want to get this 'right'.
Thanks in advance, and if posible we should amend James & Kals Quick setup guide, to more of a Detailed Setup Guide
Thanks in advance
Dan

the SMPS adj is easy, put a meter on the test area on the SMPS(a metal bar with flat end sticking out of the board) adjust the white pot on the other end to read 17.5v according to the SM for the 1209
but on the 1209s lots of the Barco gurus suggest that the SM is wrong saying to hit 17.5v, it should be 17v

My 1209s was at 17v... exactly 17.00 volts. I reset it to 17.49v, I have checked it several times since then and it's always been within .03 volts of that.

Dan, I won't be doing that.
The whole point of this list is for it to just be a checklist for someone familiar with the inner workings of the projector and someone who knows how to read the service manual.
If you're not familiar with how to read the service manual (as you stated) you shouldn't be sticking your hands inside your projector and making these adjustments (IMHO). I've read dozens of different CRT projector service manuals and I find the Barco's to just about the best written of the bunch. The instructions are typically very clear.

Kal I'm quite familiar with the 'inner workings' as you say, I've had plenty of experience with the Sony range, but this is my first Barco. I've had both tubes out, changed c-elements etc etc.
What hasn't escaped my notice however, is the number of problems people are having with the Runco/1209s of late in the forum. I suppose I was being a bit dismissive when I said that the SM was "challenging" to read (not that I couldn't read it). I was just being lazy I suppose when I asked for the information. Typically, experienced users will chime in with information that isn't documented in the SM, like the info Gary provided about the apparent voltage setting discrepancy.
As far as the service manual's go I find it very disjointed, clinical infact, each component is treated separately, in detail, yes but there is not as much "do this first, then check that" type of arrangement across the setup as a whole. More treatment at a component level. I suppose I'm just used to how the Japanese do it not the Belgians!
Kal I appreciate the intention of the quick set-up guide, I have seen it in a few locations around the web. I wasn't asking or expecting you to upgrade it. My point is that I thought the intention of the site was to inform and educate people to extract the best from their display device. I will be expanding on it for myself and a mate of mine.
I also appreciate the hazards involved in adjustments whilst the set is powered up, your 'humble opinion" is neither requested or valued in this instance.
Dan
