|
|
Hello All,
I have in my hands my first CRT, a NEC 6PG ( actually a GE branded CRT and bought from Curt Palme; thanks Curt.) in great condition, and am pretty excited to set this puppy up!
I need some feed back as to the setup I should run with. I am looking at the HD Fury 2 and the Gamma X combo. Would this give me a good picture? or should I look at box 10x0 series, Moome etc. type products. ( I want to run at a nice and clean 1080i picture )
My eventual goal is to get a PS3 running and have a dedicated theater room. I currently have a samsung home theater system which will put out HDMI for DVD's. Also for a good picture what size of screen would you reccomend for this projector( big is fine with me; I intend to try to use a completely blacked out room.)
One more thing, would it be worth it to invest in better lenses like the HD 144/145s?? Or wait until i upgrade my CRT( in a couple of years....after the recession! haha )
Any advice or input you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Mike
Can't wait to watch my CRT in action and prove to the wife that it was a good investment!

The HDFury/Gamma X combo and moome are roughly equivalent products. I've never seen a good shootout between the two.

Pick up the color filtered HD144/145 if you have the chance for sure. You will enjoy the colors. After owning a 6PG myself, I'd also recommend 1080i for far viewing distances, and 720p for close viewing distances.

Thanks Brooklyn and person 99,
Well Im leaning towards the HD Fury 2 and the Gamma X however I havent heard any positive reviews of the Gamma X yet I will wait for those until I purchase. As for the lenses I was kinda leaning towards the getting those two. Found some on e-bay just need to figure out if they will just bolt in place or need mods to fit. Anyways Thanks for the advice. When I get it all set up I will post some pics.
Thanks
Mike

I wouldn't run it much wider than 85-90 inches for best punch

Well, having beta tested several of Kim's products and used them in my system for quite a long time, I would recommend one of those because I've not tried the Gamma X. However, the RTC2200 will cost you $80 more and may not benefit you if you don't need the component input.

Thanks Hailtoby and Analog! I really appreciate your help. To be honest I haven't really open the machine yet to see what I currently have for lenses on the 6PG. I will be doing this on the weekend. Ill post something on that once I take a look. Hailtoby - I am currently in talks with a guy regarding some lenses on e-bay Im alway a little leary about e-bay stuff but Im looking at a good deal. These were appearently out of a NEC PG Xtra see the pics attached. If this falls through I will contact you regarding your lenses.
If anyone has any advice on wether these would be the right it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Yep, those are the ones. They should bolt on with absolutely no problems and they will be a nice upgrade from the, Im assuming, HD6 lenses.

I didn't see this on the NEC specifics pages and don't know...are the stock lenses tinted on these or is he going to have to replace tinted glycol with clear? Just so he knows what he's getting into, if so. Good luck...Mike! PS - I'm betting the wife will be pleased. Mine was loving the Sound of Music on a lesser-machine last night.

Plain PG (6000 or 9000) or the GE version of it came with color corrected and color filtered (tinted) HD-6C ML lenses.

Hi Mike - I snapped two quick pics of my quickly-setup 7"ESF machine for a GammaX comparison for you. There are some sales pics and others around, but thought this might help. My setup is:
OPPO DVD upconverted to 1080i -> HDMI -> HDFury3 -> GammaX -> 50ft RGBHV cable.
One is GammaX set down all the way (as if not there) and the other is with it set about 1/2-way up. This shows you what it will do. For now, it helps this noob tolerate dark movies like Black Dahlia and Das Boot.
If you buy the tinted 145s, I'd be a little interested in your tinted HD6Cs (for not very much, though!).

as an owner of 3 NEC CRTs, the 9PG Plain, 9PG Xtra, and XG1100, I can say they are amazing projectors (especially considering their age). The image they all project has amazing color and sharp detail. I can say that HD-144/HD-145 lenses would be a nice upgrade from the HD-6's (IMHO the HD-144/145 lenses are sharper and focus tighter).
So welcome to the CRT world! You will love your projector once you get it setup! Don't worry the wife will too i'm sure
FYI, NEC projectors need love, they aren't the easiest of projectors to setup, especially for a first timer, but after a few hours you start to get the hang of it!

They are not hard to set up either, you just need to know what setting does what. When you know that, and which one to adjust, they are very easy to set up.
Ill almost bet you have that HD Fury set to the 0-255 colour space, if you set it to the 16-235 colour space, youll find itll be brighter in the low end.
See how her face looks un-naturally white? Try it with the HD Fury set on the 16-235 mode, and with the GammaX removed, and itll look somewhere in between what you have posted, or it certainly does in my experience with a 9PG.

Also in my experience with the HD Fury 3 and the GammaX, all the way down on the GammaX is NOT the same as gone completely.
Im certainly not saying dont use the GammaX, im saying try with the HD Fury 3 with DIP switch 4 turned OFF so you dont have the HD Fury 3 trying to upscale the colour space, and then try with and without the GammaX.
Om not saying im a foremost expert and know everything, im just saying try it, and if you see what i saw, youll be happier with it on 16-235 and you may even find you dont need the GammaX in the chain for anything coming out of the HD Fury 3.
