It was a joke... Did you see the title of the article? Kanye's new album is called "808s and Heartbreak." 808s... as in Barco 808s... Get it?

I'm assuming in his title, the syntax means "808" plural - as in several 808s... Whatever an 808 is.

I just have one thing to say on Kanye... If Kanye West actually had a CRT projector, then we'd have exactly ONE thing in common. From what I know of, I REALLY dislike the guy. Every time I hear him talk, he says something that pisses me off.

Given he's in the music business, this is my best guess:

Absolutely classic drum machine - if you're listening to an '80s synthpop track the drums are almost certainly straight from an 808, and a ton of newer stuff use derivatives of the sounds.

Could be something else, but it doesn't seem likely.

808s are going for big bucks in working shape. Probably more than a BG808s...Sad

HOLY CRAP, I just checked!

I'm going to make cheap chinese copies of that thing, and of the TB-303, saw one going for about 1300 Euro. (5000 USD)

Given that you can get samplesets and softsynths that will do pretty much the same thing, your chinese copy probably wouldn't do very well...

It'd be neat to have one, but I'm crap with midi so it would be pointless for actually making music.

Urban Dictionary sez: "808: 1. The penal code for disturbing the peace. Refers to the sound of bass from stereos. "

That'd be my guess...

EDIT: Whups, nope, Wikipedia says it's named for the Roland: "The album was recorded in under two weeks in Hawaii. As implied by its title, 808s & Heartbreak prominently features the Roland TR-808 drum machine. West felt that the 808 is an important instrument that can be used to evoke emotion; the concept was introduced to him by Jon Brion. According to West, the fact that Hawaii's area code was "808" was incidental, as he had already developed the album's title before being informed."

Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia as references in the same post... the long tail of web 2.0 shows its wisdom again! Wink
