Got a few questions concerning a sony 1252Q. I mangaged to get one from the school where i work with low hours and now burn-in for $5 at the school auction. So i figured $5 why not. I have it over to my home now and I am looking at how i can use it. The basement room that I will have as the theater is just under 15'x 15' square give or take a few inches. Is this too small of a space to get a reasonable image out of it? I won't be able to mount or hang it so i have been looking at doing an adjustable table type of thing to set it on and maybe place a seat or two on each side of it on the back wall. Any thoughts? Here is a blue print of the basement of my model of home. http://rhrconstruction.net/wp-content/belbpwebmodel1.pdf

$5 for a 1252. Good deal!

Assuming you're planning on using a 7' - 8' wide screen (8' is the reasonable max for these machines without destroying brightness - 7' wide is about ideal), the throw will probably be in the 9' ballpark. Around 1.2 times screen width is a reasonable assumption for throw distance, but you'll want to read the section of the CRT primer about "maximizing rasters". There are no zoom lenses on CRTs, so the screen size/projector throw relationship is a fixed one. Bigger screen means a longer throw. A shorter throw means a smaller screen.

Why won't you be able to hang it from the ceiling? Floor mounting is an acceptable solution, but most people around here (including me) will tell you you'll be giving the projector the best seat in the house. OTOH, I have a good friend with a 1252 in what we typically refer to as a "coffee table" mount. He has a sofa flanking in on each side and it works very nicely.

Also, I noticed a couple of windows on the basement plans. Make sure you plan for some good light-controlling drapes, because front projection requires near darkness to look right.

Take a look at my buddy's room in page 2 of this AVS thread on floor/table mounts. It was a 1252 in the pics and was later upgraded to a 1272.

85.33x48 painted drywall screen. Very low-budget, but great room.

I have exactly the same installment with my 1270.
Throwdistance is 11,5' lens to screen.
Screenwidth is 9,7' Mr. Green
Before that i had a 8,2'screen but a basement is dark enough for our candlelight-CRTs Mr. Green

Behind the screen i have a black carpet on the wall and the sidewalls and roof are painted black 6' into the room.

Looks great with hdmi-input and 1080i on DVD and HD-DVD.

!!! Most important is to work with the "colorcalibration for Dummies"-section. Thumbs Up !!!

My windows are prepared doublesided with sunprotection-foil for carwindows Wink
