Just wondering how it looks and whether it's worth a try and or is noticably better than my HDDVD version.

Watched Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D, I have to agree with Cliff, on my system the glasses shifted the grayscale way to green. The 3D effects were kind of cool but color was terrible because of the glasses.

Yes. Absolutely horrible. They should recall this disc.

....and so begins the back lash. Wonder how long it'll take the studios to pull this from the shelves?

With Blu-ray JTTCTE you can choose 2D or 3D via the menus. It's funny to watch without the glasses....It looks like you have horrible convergence.

Well that's no SO BAD then. I remember a night when I thought my RPTV needed a convergance touch up. SO I opened the 184 pt convergence menu at 3am after a 1/4 bottle of Vodka. aparently it was just me

I wonder how long before someone develops a polarizer for home theatre projection. Of course this is more suited to digital, but I figure there should be a way of making it work with the "Real-3D" glasses that the theatre sells with the 3D movies.
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" was pretty decent in polarized 3D (at the theatre).

That would require 2 projectors yes?

They're fun to try for 10-20 minutes but watching a whole movie is painful.
Buy the movies for the excellent 2D transfer, not for the 3D.

That's what pisses me off the most...........
I already have the HD DVD. I double dipped for the 3D. Bastards............

Good question.
I know the Galaxy in Waterloo played "Journey" in 3D in their digital cinema (yes, "hick town" with only 1 digital theatre).
I believe that the projector used is the Christie Digital CP2000 DLP cinema projector.
My impression was that they install a special assembly that is capable of changing the polarization of the projected light between vertical and horizontal under electronic trigger. This could be done by introducing an LCD shutter for each polarization element. The light path could (should?) be split in two, passed through a polarization filter (one per path), and recombined for shooting towards the screen.
I know that I have seen LCD elements used in light paths to change the characteristics of the light (not to display an image). At the moment I cannot recall what I took apart that had one of these though. Either way, it think the same sort of technology is used in the new digital projectors with auto iris control to allow quick changes in the light output.
If the source material is displayed with the left eye (to be horizontally polarized) and right eye (vertically polarized) interleaved, and the electronic shutters are triggered in sync, I believe that the proper effect could be produced.
The Christie looks to be between 2-6kW Xenon lamp, so there is a lot of light to block with an LCD shutter. Maybe there is something else used.
*LAUGHING* Ok, now I figure out that Google and Wikipedia are a good resource. Here is the definitive answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_D_Cinema
Very cool technology anyways, and I don't see any reason why it couldn't be done at home with a fair bit of expense, and of course the proper source material. Maybe some day

Interesting. I'd have to see an example to see if it's worth it, but they sure seem to be making a lot of money with the 3D releases.
But it's bound to look like crap in your HT unless you have the fancy circular-polarization equipment, yes?

Hmmm two projectors 6 cir. polarizing lenses, two HDFeeds 1080i/96...now there's an experiment.

Yeah, you would definitely need the proper circular polarization equipment. The glasses themselves are pretty useless. Of course if you look through them backwards at an LCD, you can make it go black
Interestingly, looking through the glasses (properly) at my LCD causes some colour shifting as I tilt my head side to side.
The movies are pretty decent in 3D - the effect definitely works, as long as you let yourself get into it. I remember watching Beowulf a while back and feeling like my eye was going to get poked out by a sword at one point. We were sitting close to the front row (late arrivals) and it made me wince.
Journey was also decent, although I found that there were some uses of the 3D which really bothered me. It wasn't because the 3D was 'wrong', but things felt like they were in my view and I found myself wanting to look around them.
There are two really annoying things though:
1) If you are blind and have wear glasses to watch a movie (like me), it is less than convenient to put another pair over top.
2) The movie studios are over-using the 3D effects quite often. The gratuitious "3D-ing" is a bit annoying after a while. I feel like saying "Yeah dude, I *get* it.. it is a 3D movie and you can make things look 3D. I don't care that the blade of grass on the ground is bent away from me." (spurred by some scenes in Beowulf.)
As time goes on I am sure that they will stop bragging about the 3D effects in the 3D movie... at least I hope
Analog,
That would be quite an experiment 6 circular polarizers.. I could only imagine the reaction if someone asked to rent that many

Surplus - I like how you think! There are a few surplus places around here, but nothing like Toronto. I wonder if "Gorilla" Electronics is still on Queen.
*sigh* Need to get a job at Christie Digital and make some connections. I applied there out of college.. hmmmmm...

Yes Active Surplus is still around but they are upstairs in that building now. I haven't been therer in years. I tended to spend too much there. I did however make a huge score on cell batteries for my NEC P600. Never again did I find them. I bought all they had for $1 each. I went through 2 a year. I'm on my last two.

This was done many years ago by Sony iirc.
They had 2 projectors on top of each other set up like a blend, 1 was upside down so the R&B tubes were on the opposite sides.
You had to wear the LCD glasses to make it work and they were trying to get it to work without the glasses.
This was in an old electronics magazine from the late 1980's or early 1990's, I think it was Electronics Australia.
I might still have the magazine somewhere.
