|

Got my 'new' Marquee 8500 last week, looked DOA, but fixed it with help from Forum (the HVPS came unplugged during transport).
So... have started setup from scratch using Bills Marquee Magnetics Setup 101 from here:
http://www.curtpalme.com/ElectrohomeMarquee_Downloads.shtm
and he says not to connect a source. So.... after MANY hours, I get the magnetics perfect with geometry and convergence perfect. (is there a way to save it into a memory slot without a source?).
I then added a source (a laptop). That seemed to go ok in terms of color and convergence... but didn't fill the screen. I then pressed # to get the same test pattern I've been using as see that its shifted about 2" left!!! Does that mean I have to do the entire geometry and setup again?
I then added a DVD source, via component into a Box1040. The image seems a little distorted, brightness is low, the source width seems to be only 1/2 the size of the screen width, image is shifted, the colors are a bit out of wack... almost like its not syncing properly. How does one force the PJ to sync correctly?
I then added a STB source, via component into a Box1040. Same issue. Brightness is low... the image seems to vibrate a little, the colors are off, the source width seems to be only 1/2 the size of the screen width... again it seems its not syncing properly.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kevin.

The internal test pattern timings are different than the external. You should use the source to center the image on the tube face. Use the source you plan to watch most. If its a Blu ray or DVD use a full feild patern or a grid from the DVE disc or similar , or if useing a VP use their paterns, but i use the source from my bluray player. put up the full field and center the image to the tube face, I try to keep the corners of the image centered. the astig you did with internals will be ok, a little secrete is to set up the marquee at a higher rate you plan to use then copy it down to the res you plan to use and touch up the convergence.
Also when doing the astig some do it twice they start at a low scan rate, then go to a higher one then you plan to use and tweek it some more, then when you go to your planed rate it will look best. so start at 32hz say and then move up to 72 or 96 on the internal frequency , then when you put in your source at say 48 or 60 hz refresh rate it should look very good.

So.... after MANY hours,Kevin. | that's right, you don't use a source to do the magnetics, ONLY. everything else, especially convergence, you have to have a source connected and feeding the resolution you plan to use.

Well for magnetics no, but to center the image on the tube face you need the external source set up so you can move the image to the center using only the focus coil, you'll get less convergence drift this way from my own experience. I used to center the grid internally but would fight convergence a lot and get massive banding. By centering a full field color with the focus coil everything seemed to work better. But first i did the grid centering using internals then went to the source to center my image using the focus coil.
I then was using less phase controls, i think this in turn helped stabilize convergence.
Also look at this post on the AV forums in europe, this method works great !
