Trying to get DVD working on XG75. Works fine for all full screen DVDs, but when I put in any Wide Screen anamorphic disk, as soon as it leaves the DVD player menu screen, it loses sync. Since it can't find sync, it won't let me add it as a new input source. I think i once saw a flash of an 'unregistered signal' message before it becomes unreadable due to sync loss. It also seems to sync for just a second when it transitions from the menu to run the movie - just long enough to see that an image and know it got there.

I am using the component outputs on the DVD player through a component to RGB transcoder (korean knock off that worked great for my Barco for years - and now works great on the XG75 for full screen DVD as well as Dish 622 outputs).

Any ideas at all would be most helpful.

When you are playing a full screen DVD with no problem, try hitting the "INFO" button on your remote to see what kind of signal the projector is getting. What resolution are you normally running? 1080i, 720p?

Thanks for the reply. Here is what i am seeing:

For reference, I get a solid sync on both 1080i and 720p from the Dish 622 at 34.25khz and 45khz respectively - i believe this is is about as should be expected. I have not actually played much with trying tweak out at 720 so not sure which is actually prefered - something to do this winter). (note that vertical is always 59.9hz)

Point is, it seems to sync fine at either 1080i or 720p (from Dish622) so one would assume the same would be true for DVD.

For the DVD, when the start menus are up and when it goes on to display of full screen video, it says 16.3khz (approximately 480i/NTSC i believe). With a widescreen DVD, upon transition from menu to movie, it loses sync, so i can't tell what it says. But, I memorized the keystrokes to get a signal registered and it captured the un-synced signal at 14.96k- oddly, it also logged 33.3hz Vert - no idea if this accurate (probably not), but it did log values. The full screen actually looks visually like 480i (scan lines are obvious).

I am going to try going back to the SVideo through a DVDO doubler just to see what happens. This is what I used on my Barco before progressive scan/component DVDs came out and i bought the transcoder. I actully think the DVDO was a bit better picture back then (3:2 pulldown capable) anyway, but now of course, i want to start looking into BluRay - but since i can't even seem to get an old anamorphic disc to work, i don't see a point in moving to the next level of BluRay - one step at a time...

I can't understand what's going on... There should be no difference in the signal the DVD player puts out regardless of whether it's playing in widescreen mode or not. 480i is 480i and 480p is 480p. The only difference is if you've told the DVD player your display is 4:3, then it will have to matte (letterbox) widescreen material, so in effect, it's recomposing the picture. Sounds like the DVD player could be messed up.

Could you tell us what model DVD player you have, how it's configured, and how it's cabled to the projector?

You really, really, really, REALLY should be upscaling that DVD.

You need a video processor/scaler, or a PC or at least a progressive scan DVD player!!!


And go straight to Bluray, you won't regret it.
