I thought there was going to be a link behind this one.
Is he a former forum member?

Mark hasn't posted much here, but he was (is?) a huge contributor over on the A forum. Many years ago (and archives back), when I first got started with CRT PJs, I benefitted enormously from reading his numerous extremely informative posts. A student at the feet of the master, as it were. You could always be sure that if it was something he felt worth writing, it would be well worth reading. He was a fountain of knowledge, and always willing to take the time to share.
Ah, the good old days. Thanks very much, Mark!

Gee, I'm a little embarassed now... Such kind words Tim & Tom. And Tom, I don't own one - more like twenty.
While I don't post very much, I'm usually on here at least a few times a week seeing what's going on. That is, I'm on this forum and the Avs forum. Things have really changed. In the early days the discussions at Avs were technically light and you had to go to the TAW forum to work raw details. After TAW closed their forum all there was was Avs and technical content went up. Now with Avs and Curt's forums there's some good redundancy available.
I started in the hobby of being compulsory about Barco CRT projectors in 1998 when I bought my first BG800 for some $2000+ and was hooked. Who would have thought I could have a big screen for so little.
Then it broke at the end of the year after having it for only 10 months. As luck had it, the regional Barco authorized service department was just a few miles down the road close to Texas Stadium. I ended up with a replacement splitter, EHT, a controller with newer firmware, and a service manual. Made the repairs and all of a suddend I was addicted to the modular Barco design.
The idea of finding some spare parts seemed judicious since these HD capable projectors were made back in 1990 and would be teenagers in a few years. So I started buying a unit here, a couple there, and then came unglued and out of control.
I even started a "for fun" web site that found its way into search engines and I started getting emails and making friends all over the world. I had a blast with it, but at some point I changed internet providers and didn't put it all back out there for public use. My favorite parts were the "dust is death" rant and how to check and grade tubes. I still shamelessly credit myself with putting a wear number on tubes first. I was flattered every time I saw someone else do it on their site and on eBay and even used pictures of tubes I still have to this day. At least when Eric Lang did it, he called and asked if it was okay. Too bad about his business, but if I had tried to make it as a business it would have ended badly for me as well.
Don't expect much, but here's all that's left of my old web site...
http://webpages.charter.net/web6589/barco/
At peak, I had just over 60 Barco projectors and several pallet loads of parts. I sold a few here and there, but didn't have the desire to turn it into a business so it was slow. I'm down to about 20 projectors right now and that's only because I just gave away somewhere around 15+ ES focus projectors - mostly 800's, and a few 1101, 1600 units. The guy that wanted them was an old Barco tech from that authorized location in years past and wanted a hobby. I think I might have overwhelmed him though. I'm going to have to keep checking on him to see if he ever got started working any of them.
Since the remaining projectors are still taking up too much room, I'm currently debating which projectors must go next...
Thanks!
Mark

Man, if I had known there was such a Barco guru local and could have gotten a few hours of Mark's time I probably would have went ahead and put the 1209 with the minty tubes and newly modded Eiseman boards back together instead of parting it out.

Mark,
If you find you desperately need to get rid of some clean R and B sony 808 tubes, I can give you an address to which they can be sent...

Sorry I missed out on that. I still have a piece of cardboard I hang around my neck that says "I'll work on Barco's for beer and gas money".

What? No G?
Does "desperately" mean they have to be free?
My day job currently has me working with a small company in Ithaca. I guess if I was really desperate I could even volunteer to go on the next trip, bring the tubes, and install them....
