Testing a tester, I shorted HV to chassis. Now the PJ turns on, but powers itself off after 10 seconds or so and flashes F6/00 on the diag output.
I've got a runco-ized 9 to play with, I'd just rather be playing with my Marquee.

Man, I hate it when that happens. Are you sure its F6 and not F9. There is no F6 listed for the Extra but there is F9. If it is F9 then thats Focus. Try disconnecting the focus board and see what happens. HV to ground can take anything out.

Not really... As it's shutting itself down, both red LEDs on the def board flash briefly, first D023 in the center of the board then D010 near the edge half an eyeblink later. Neither showed a glimmer during the previous 10 seconds as the PJ was bringing itself up.

It's F6, I'm certain. Upside down the '6' appears as a '9' (and the F is bass ackward also!)
The only thing I've been able to google up so far has been F6/FC on an XG, and it was HVPS related.

Hmmm. I'm looking right in the Extra service manual and no F6. Unless that 6 is something else, its not listed. If its definitely a 6 then you have to ignore it and keep searching. I would try disconnecting the obvious first, conv, focus, astig, etc and see if it changes. If still nothing then you have to start checking voltages. The leds on the deflection sound normal. Unless Curt has a magical option to check.

The XG thread I found at the AVS archive said that F9 was not 'in the book' but Doug Baisey IIRC replied that it was an HV power supply fault.
I'll see if I can re-google the thread.

Let me go take a picture of the damn thing and rotate it.

This is the AVS archive thread I was referring to, and it DOES say F6. I have no idea what I'm doing currently, perhaps my lyzdexia is vertical too.

Good and Bad. Good because its listed as HV down. Bad because you have to determine if its power to HV supply or supply itself or highvoltage shutdown. Start swapping!

Heywood:

I've got a 9PG Xtra with burnt tubes here, but the chassis powers up fine. I've also got a tubeless 1208/2 with some kind of H failure (I never powered it up). You're welcome to them; I'm not far from you.

I may well take them just to get my production HT back up and running (the 9PG) and my silly neighbor (the V fail on the 1208.)
PM me, let me know on what terms.
