I have a chance to pick up a 61" Sony XBR rptv. The guy says it has a convergence problem. Is this a common problem with this model? Is it easy to fix? What is the projector inside like? Do I want this thing? I would be willing to part it out if there are people interested in the guts.

Do you have a model #?
The only 61" XBR I found was a 4:3 1080i set that looked like it was made 8-10 years ago.
It could be a simple problem but I would pass.

I'd be more then happy to talk you through the fix. I probably have the service manual for it. They are excellent sets and you'd be more then happy with the pic if it all works out.

Have not seen it, and he just emailed and said it was gone, he gave it to someone else. That's okay, I have enough projects to work on.

I just saw a JVC 46" being given away for free, but it also had the convergence issue. I thought about telling my father about it, but it would end up costing me money to go pick it up and replace the parts.

Upgraded parts can now be had for 29.95 plus shipping. That includes both ic's and are original Sanyo parts.

Thanks Mac, but you're not getting me to go get this.
That is good news about the parts, if I ever see one of the big daddies like the Mits with a problem being given away then I might bite. It is interesting how cheap CRT RPTVs are going for.

Are you sure it is HDMI? I couldn't find any specs and it looked like it was around five or so years old.
The only reason I would consider getting it is maybe for my neighbor. He is running OTA and has an old TV. He has shown no interest in the past of upgrading though. When I was in Miami, I tried helping some neighbors out in the same way to no avail. One old lady has an ancient 70's TV with OTA. When I scored my Monovisions, I offered her one and to set it up. She just complained that it was to big. As for my father, he has both of my old direct views set up side by side. One is my old top of the line 30" Panasonic from '96 that has an excellent SD picture. The other is the Proscan/RCA MM3600, which does HD. I also gave him my old flexy TV stand that I Wilsonarted in marble. That thing is strong as an ox. Of course the real significance of the stand is that gave me the idea of using Wilsonart as a screen material. A couple of years later and lots of satisfied Wilsonart screen owners. Anyway, I think my dad is doing ok.

It almost worked, Beast. I just looked and it is gone. Oh well, I don't sweat this as so many people want to go flat screen that there is hundreds of CRT RPTVs on craigslist. I love when people say that there is a problem with the picture like this guy:
| Quote: | Silver, 55" Philips Big Screen TV for sale
In working condition, sold as is. There is a double image that comes up on the edges of the TV due to the cross-hairs not being aligned. The problem is repairable.
Price Negotiable
Will respond quickly via email |
Considering it has this problem and the rather lengthy repair procedure, I think he should pay me to take it away.
