Just wanted to report about my renewed love for CRT. I currently have both a G90 with only about 800 hours on it that I picked up awhile back. Right next to it I have an RS2. Most of the time I have been watching the RS2 because we play some video games on it and I let my kids watch the cartoons and Disney movies on it. I had gotten very used to how the RS2 looked and was having thoughts of selling the G90 and once and for all going away from CRT. Well let me tell you that all changed when I bought Dark City the other day. I decided I would watch it on the 90 rather then the RS2. Right from the start the room went pitch black...so black that I couldn't see my hand in front of my face...so black that i thought the projector died on me.....Wow...I was in love again...I then switched over the the RS2...same scene...it was like a flash light was on in the room. Everything there after looked muted in color and contrast...amazing..

Just wanted to say that it could happen to any of us..we get used to watching the latest and greatest(?) technology and start telling yourself that its ok and you don't need that bus hanging above your head any more. Take my advice..if you are haning on the fence ready to ditch CRT run the Dark City Test.. I bet you change your mind pretty quick and remember why you keep that hulk around a little longer.

I really have to wonder, though, how many pitch-black lovers out there are crushing their shadow detail. I have my 8500 set up with a Moome gamma booster, and I actually have it boosted more than I should. The gamma measures out at about 2.18. And even so, shadow detail gets lost when there are other bright objects on the screen. It would definitely be better with a good LC projector like the G90, but...

I usually run my brightness a few clicks higher than "pitch dark blacks." I can see the screen when you get a fade to black, but I can also see a lot more detail in dark scenes.

I'll take a slight loss of visibility in shadows over the inability to do anything that resembles black.

I'm sure there are plenty who are running at absolute black without realising how much low end detail they are crushing.

I prefer inky blacks with minimal crush.

It's not very easy to set up though.

Yes, their projector when they're told after 4 years that they can't get parts/bulbs. Mr. Green

Maybe I'm not picky enough yet, but I seem to be able to get pretty good shadow detail and completely, utterly jet black on my 808 if I'm careful with the gamma. But then again, I'm noobish enough on colors to have just figured out to set my whitepoint first and then figure out gamma for R/G/B. The filters I put on the PT65s make for awesome primaries, but I'm having a hell of a time getting grayscale right! Smile

(It doesn't help that I was working on the gamma from the equipment room, off to the left of the screen, and I'm not used to a higher gain screen with color shift. I'd get white looking good, and when I'd go back to the seating area everything would be pink! Mr. Green)
