I just connected a Faroudja NRS rated at 1024 x768, right away the "overscan" warning came on and the XG powered off. I
thought XG s could handle this and more, at least to 960P. I guess I was wrong. What did I miss? Can this be made to accept
what the NRS can deliver?

It should handle it, something is wrong with the projector or your source.

540P from another NRS worked ok for this XG.

That isn't right. I've never had overscan come up at all on any NEC XG series..

Be carefull with the NRS series, as they can be sent back to Faroudja to be reset to another resolution, are you the original owner?

Mike, no, I'm not the original owner. I have spoken to Rob over at Life Styles Home Entertainment before about NRS, but not this particular experience. On a label at the back of the NRS it states 1024 x 768 digital projectors. I did ask him about this in relation to using for crt. He said no problem. Sorry, did not say for those not familiar,Lifestyles do the upgrades to "universal" for Faroudja. So my NRS I have connected to a 19" Samsung computer monitor,great picture. Got a Moone dvi card in B slot and Samsung 451 putting out HD antenna which is 1024 x768 or is it?

The source I used when overscan came on was Dishnetwork basic. I thought I was going to get a better picture at 768p. I also was going to try dvd.

Curt, the default data is showing on line 4 to 69 Hz as registered but line 5 which is 70-100Hz says "none" Does it mean this XG is only able to scan to 69Hz and the NRS is trying to put out more?

Are you sure the H and V cables aren't reversed? Are the cables intact? That's really the only thing that comes to mind.

Did it display the scanrate when it errored?

It will say something like "MAXIMUM SCANRATE EXCEEDED" and it should display the rate....I did it once with my XG.

The max scanrate of an 852 is 85khz, hence the name.

No Mark, no scan rate when it errored.

Ok, this is what happened. I got an NRS from a guy a few months ago, rated 1024 x 768. It was dead on arrival. The guy was good enough to refund my money less shipping. I kept it laying around, not sure what to do with it. I just wanted to see what an NRS could do for my picture.

A couple of weeks ago I got another NRS, it was rated 540p and worked fine. Made a little difference over 480i. Yesterday I put the power supply from the 540p NRS into the dead 1024 x768. It works now, but when I connected it to the 852 an unexpected error and shut down.

I sat thinking about things and decided to reconnect( after shutdown I disconnected the NRS from the XG) After reconnecting, the message on the screen was, as far as I recall, did I yes/no want to allow this scan change or addition. i know this is poor recall, but I was just expecting another error warning and shut down again, but no, it accepted it ok the second time. The only thing I did different was to disconnect the computer monitor I was using earlier in the day

Thats my story and I watched for an hour with no problems.

The only thing that goes wrong with the Faroudja is the power supply. They have a replacement that is upgraded. Early signs it will need a hard reset to get working (unplugged) for a few minutes. When you send in for the multi-res output they usually change out the power supply but that was a couple of years ago.

I'm guessing on this but I have seen this overscan before but that was hooked up wrong where the red was put on the ACAT BNC then the rest were followed out of sequence.

One note on the default data area, the freq listed on the right side is the freq used and stored to that default block. If you dont store a default to use for the freq range block it will be empty. There is a possibility that you were storing to default and changing what it had before in that block and it was wanting you to confirm it. If you were using 1024X768P at the signal entry you might have overwritten it.
This could also be a different application if default was for front floor or front ceiling.

When your first doing a signal entry and you want to build a fresh set up (geometry) you would want to select temporary instead of default. Later when everything is perfect you can then store it to the default area. This way you wont be over or under correcting from data that was saved before.

Hitting the 'info' button will show you the freq of the source signal and properties. Great projector BTW the 1352 and 852 has bi-quad line distortion as well as center and edge. Enjoy. Doug
