... can't help but notice today that there's a new forum member that has a whopping 4 posts... all with things for sale. It is an open forum, he's also selling possibly useful CRT parts... but should we allow people to come on here that have contributed nothing to the forum in the past to just put up posts in the classifieds.

I think the projector he is "parting out" may be pushing the boundaries a little as it is a fully functional projector. But the Moome card and the Joust mod kit are items people can't buy from you so they don't hurt your business.

Maybe he will use the proceeds to buy a new projector from you Smile

The "you have to have 10 posts before you can sell" rules are well intentioned but they are bull****. People can spam to 10 posts and then sell stuff.

I like forums that require a new ad to be approved by the mods before it is placed. Granted this takes a LOT of time.

Maybe make it so only club members can post. If they pay you a fee, what do you care if they spam.

Greg, a rule requiring new users to be members for 30, 45 or 60 days (or more) before they can post for sale ads is much more effective.

That's a good suggestion, change the forsale section to only allow club members to post but allow all users to read.

Or for non club members a one time fee per ad.

BTW, as I've recently posted a few items forsale here I've found that I've had much better response from the adds I placed on Videogon.

I don't really care, it just struck me as a bit of 'taking advantage of the system'. BUt yeah, maybe a 30 day time lapse before you can start an ad in the classifieds might stop the people that contribute nothing here. Last thing I need is for a buncha scammers to show up here like those stupid cell phone listings we had a while back.

I was thinking something along these same lines over the last few days. I may have something that would be useful for the forum members (saving money on a bluray solution) but don't necessarily want to post it for the whole world. I was going to contact Kal once I determine if this will really work to see if there would be a way to post this that only members could view it.

I guess we could have a separate area to post in once the membership is activated. Just thinking aloud, I'll leave it up to Kal...

Now there is a great idea! Might be frustrating enough to make spammers go away.

But add to it, they must also have at least a few posts a week during that time. Not just join wait 30 days and post a sale, make them work for it.

Curt, has this been a problem, or is it simply a one time thing that bugged you?

Changing rules because of a single person doesn't make as much sense than if this has been a continuing problem. Just my opinion but I've always thought that the fewest rules a place can have while maintaining fairness is ideal.

He may just not have a lot to say, so never registered. I didn't register until I got my first CRT, and I was reading long before that. He may be taking advantage of the system, but it does nothing but benefit us all. I kind of look at that forum as more of a benefit to the members who frequent the site, and members who have paid(I think you need to pay to watch a topic, right?

I think forcing people to post just degrades the quality of posts or forces more work on moderators to QA. Waiting days might make me wait for something I really want and or need, and I'd rather get it now. Thumbs Up

Frankly, I wouldn't see a problem with making for-sale posting a members-only activity. Why not? It's not like membership here is big money or anything. It's a measly $20 a year. Many of us spend several times that much on Blu-ray disks, Netflix, HD satellite, or beer - every month.

It wouldn't be so much a matter of changing rules because of one person, but simply making what is a great service (selling things to a decent captive audience), a perk for members only. Paying club members probably help defray the costs of running the site more than anything else, I'd imagine. It also sounds more than fair - you can post on the site, participate, and can browse and buy anything you want for free - but if you want to sell stuff, pony up the measly twenty bucks and join the club!

Just a thought.

Not really a problem I don't think, but a 'no posting in the buy/sell until you have XXX posts or a timeline might prevent some of those spammers as well. Come to think of it, I think those people posted their spam in the CRT section, so it might not stop them...

I think part of it is the hesitancy of newbies to post. I know as a partial introvert, I hesitated posting about stuff I didn't know about over at avs, but then there were enough stupid questions there that I DID know about so I posted..Very Happy

Everyone, whether they've owned a CRT or not will have something valuable to add to any conversation, be it about thoughts about room design, audio or whatever, we just need to encourage them to speak out.

In this cited case that I posted about, the guy obviously had had a few CRTs before, as his descriptions were bang on and accurate, so he knew SOMETHING about CRTs. It just got me to thinking, and that pissed me off, when I have to think..Very Happy
