I need some expert advice... I'm feeding VGA to Sony VPH-1031QM from a cheapo DVD player (Silvercrest KH 6511) through Barco VGA Interface 9827620. Or at least the player has VGA out connector for the RGB signal, but probably the signal isn't really VGA but some progressive video. (I don't have a scope, so can't measure it.)

The problem I have is that horizontal porch is too small, i.e. the image is slightly larger than raster and wraps at the edges. The image geometry settings in the projector affect the raster (not the image inside the raster) so they can't fix this. It is possible to adjust horizontal shift to center the image on the raster, but since the image is too large, it's just deciding whether I crop/wrap from the left or right. (In practice I crop from the left, since it wraps at the right.)

To me it seems that horizontal blank timing is not correct. Sony VPH-1031QM has adjustments for blanking (RV501-RV504 on the DA board) but these seem to affect the image only in video frequency, not in the hi-scan mode. I can't affect the signal source, since it has very basic settings. (Haven't really opened the player, but I would assume there are no knobs to turn there but everything is digital, and the setup menus don't allow changing things like this.)

Is there any way to adjust horizontal blanking in hi-scan mode, or should I just accept this ~2% crop? It's of course possible to bring in new equipment to process the signal (or just change the player), but as you may have guessed from the list of equipment, this is really a low budget setup. Smile Expensive additions don't really make sense.

Hello. From your name i assume that you live in Pal country, like me Wink
I had 1031 Sony time ago and I remeber that blanking works just like you described, i bet that you cannot do anything to those porches, there are not adjust for those in player. Pal signal has huge porches and only way to adjust those is scaler or Htpc. Trye to look for cheap Dvdo i-scan hd / or hd+ or trye to live with that 2% crop.

I live in the same PAL land yes. Smile But I'm not feeding PAL signal to the PJ. Just one working signal is enough for me. Smile The DVD player has built-in scaler/deinterlacer and VGA out so I'm using that.

I did some further testing with the player today. It seems to produce 720x540 pixel image, at 50 or 60 Hz vertical refresh. (Vertical refresh depends on if I choose PAL or NTSC, but the resolution is the same for both.) The horizontal refresh is probably the same as VGA. So 720 pixel wide image is basically VGA with horizontal overscan of 40 pixels at both sides. This means that the image starts earlier and ends later in the raster, so the only way to fix this is to adjust horizontal blanking at the projector - and there seems to be no control for this in hi-scan mode.

If i remember correct mine 1031 had very minimal blanking effect at high scan mode. I replaced all electorlytcaps on that boad back then on and that didnt make any improvements for blanking range. There might be one solution ( I DONT RECOMMENT IT ) back when i had 1031 i had problem with picture size (tv-programs at 576i and dvdīs at 567p) those two had different horizontal size, i readet service manual and found that there was factory adjustment for voltage for hor.def that varied with h-def freq. That adjustment was labeled F/V adjustment or something.. (Voltage vs. freq.) and it was adjustet by two solid resistors. Problem is that there is no limit for that supply voltage, so if you adjust it wrong you can let that magic smoke out. So if you want to trye it, do it with your own risk.
Also it might be worth to look that area near blanking adjustments if there is room for modding some resistor values..
But like i said, cheap scaler wound be easyest option.
