I am going to pick-up a Barco 1209 tomorrow. The owner said it was in his condo when he bought it but its too complicated to use, so he bought a digital. Anyway, this thing is sitting on the floor, upside down, with a ceiling mount attached to t he base. Flipping it over is out of the question, its sitting on a nice hardwood floor. I am going by myself and he and his neighbor are going to help me carry it down to my truck.

My easy question to barco owers is: Can I access a view to the tubes in its current position?

I told him I as long as its not majorly f'd up, I would buy it, no questions. He said the "bulbs"were changed out recently. Im assuming the previous owner told him that. On my NEC, there would be no way to inspect the tubes with the projector in that position save for shining a flshlight down the lens. And the NEC is a little bit easier to wrestle around, I assume.

Question 2: Does that work with LC PJs? (flashlight down the lens)

Even it I cant see the tubes, I think I will buy it no matter what. Its that great of a deal, and Im dying of upgrade-itis.

So please, some advice...

I'll bet he's BSing about the 'bulbs'. EVERYONE says that...Wink

Take a long shaft 8mm nutdriver with you to pull the lenses. That takes about 60 lbs off the set anyways. Then you can see the tube faces.

Oh, ONLY take the 4 8mm bolts that hold the lenses to the tube frames. Take off more than that, and you've got a pint of cooling fluid all over his floor.

Thanks Curt. I wasnt sure if I would be able to pull them with it upside down. Thanks for being specific with the tool, too. Now I dont have to show up like a jamoke with a tool box. I can just pull a nutdriver from my pocket and look like a pro.

Can you reach the lens screws with the cover still on it? I haven't had the cover on mine in a long time... Where is that thing anyway? Laughing
Oh yeah... the screws should have screwdriver slots in them also.

Do you remember if they are phillips or slotted screws? I know I have some long ass screwdrivers that I want to take as a back up in case my nutdriver isnt long enough to reach.

My 1209s has slotted hex head screws in it. The slots look like they are .040" wide and 5/16 long. It was built in 1999, I have no idea if earlier ones were different.

To reduce the weight and give you easy access to the lenses you might also want to remove the fiberglass lid. Just remove the two pins in the rear hinges. Good luck !

He can't get the cover off without flipping it right side up, and the owner doesn't want him to scratch the floor in the process. Pull the lenses, see if it looks like a good deal and carry it out. If the price is right and the tubes are in nice shape it's hard to go wrong. Part it out and make a few bucks if it won't power up.

The upside down thing was the whole dilemna. I just didnt want to show up wanting to look inside, but having no clue. I think the price I am taking it for would warrant buying it with poor tubes, but it would be a long ride home wondering what they look like. Also, if the tubes are bad and I can show him and explain to him the cost of re-tubing, he might be liable to just give it to me... Laughing yeah right. I think I would get a 'you suck' on that one.

Ill post how the 'bulbs' look tomorrow.

Yeah, Ill just pack it into my rolling tool box with my 500W halogen work light. Did I mention the power winch with 36 inch crane extension mounted to my box. Ill be able to gently lift it and set it on the oriental rug. Very Happy

Forget the crane extension on your winch and just bring a Skyhook.

Hi,
I recently had a similar situation. Perhaps this info will help....
The first thing I would do is use an LED flashlight to look into the lenses -
You should be able to see if there is excessive wear and whether it is worth
going any further.....An 8mm socket and extension is best....
If the PJ is sitting directly on the floor, it may be difficult to remove the lenses,
there won't be much room to work. However if you can space it up or get it on a dolly,
you can remove the lenses with the cover on - be sure to pull straight away
for the first inch or so, you don't want to scrape the first elements. Clearing the
case may require a slight tilt. After the lenses are off, it is easier to roll it over.
If you remove the ceiling mount, and use, as suggested, a heavy rug or blanket,
it is not difficult ( I did it alone) to roll the PJ over. An inexpensive furniture dolly
will help to roll it out of the room. You will not want to try to carry it upside down
- there are no good grab points. Dropped CRT PJ's are generally unreliable.
Good luck with your projects,
G

Don't shine that 500 watt light into the lenses.... you won't have anything left to bring home.

Which brings up a good point. NEVER let sunlight directly into a lens when transporting a projector with c elements as they easily melt....

I assume this was the one posted on Craigslist a week ago? I was wondering if someone on here was the one who beat me to it. Congrats, that seems like a very nice price on a 1209 even if the tubes aren't as nice as described.

Guilty. 8)

I got lucky and did my quasi-daily craigslist search for "crt projector" about an hour after it was posted and emailed right away. My wife couldnt understand the excitement I felt after beating out the 'competition.'
