|
|
I have found many sites on the web that tell you how to change the hard drive in a PS3 but all of the instructions are based on backing up the existing hard drive first. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about installing a new hard drive in a PS3 that does not have a hard drive to start with? I have an opportunity to pick one up that does not have a hard drive. Could I connect an external hard drive to another PS3 and back up to this and then install this drive in the PS3 that does not have a hard drive?
Thanks
Dan

Dan,
The drive can be new and unformatted and all that when you put it in the PS3... The PS3 will fix it up for you.
You don't have to have PS3 software backed up on it to start with.

All PS3's have HD's though. The only one that wouldn't is one with a defective HD. But as Brian mentions, it's a simple as plugging in an unformatted/completely new drive and the PS3 will just set it up.
The PS3 manual even walks you through the simple steps of replacing the drive.

Can you put a larger than normal drive in a PS3? Say 1 Terabyte?

Would swapping in a 60gig or 80gig for a 40gig result in making it backwards compatible to be able to play older games?
Thanks!

However, the PS3 uses a laptop HDD (2.5 inch) instead of a desktop HDD (3.5 inch), and you can't get those with 1TB.

Doc | 'fraid not. The 40, 60 and 80GB models had many more differences than just the HDD size, including using different processors and interfaces. The HDD doesn't make any difference to those sorts of functional differences - it's just the size of the memory.

I thoughjt I read somewhere early after the PS3 release that someone did this. Also, let's say one installs a blank drive, goes through the firmware upgrades again, and then swaps back the original drive. Is Sony intelligent enough to know you have done this?

Hi,
I've read about people using adapters and running other form factor hard drives so I imagine its doable but perhaps not quite elegant.
And as far as Firmware... then FW is on the PS3 and doesn't change when you change the hard drive. As you update the FW it's only possible to move forward in revision and changing the hard drive to something that had older Firmware makes no difference the FW will not be downgraded by doing that.
