Hi
Well I must say I am over the moon with my purchase of the G90 from a member 'oliverg' some months ago. (300hrs)
Did all the mods Green C element and fan mod.
Also replaced the Red C element as it had a blemish on it for some reason, and also replaced the glycol on the blue crt as well.
So then I calibrated it with the Spyder 2, and It just didn't look right.
Anyway I purchased the Eye One LT and tonight I calibrated it again, well the difference is remarkable it looks amazing now.
I guess my Spyder 2 was one of the ones that is way out of cal.

These are the figures I ended up with

Eye One LT
Contrast 60 Brightness 35
Gain Bias
R=199 R=162
G=230 G=172
B=126 B=161

Before with Spyder 2
Gain Bias
R=71 R=163
G=220 G=180
B=124 B=166

I have a digital camera and will take some shots when I learn how to use it, not having much luck as yet.

Any way this is the best projector I have ever owned.
I started with a Sony LCD 16:9 ratio some 10 years ago then bought a D50 new sold that and got a second hand G70 from the US which I thought was the best I'd seen but now this G90 its just a different level.

Regards
Richard

I also must thank Kal for his wonderful article on Calibration for dummies, without it I would have been lost.
Also a thank you to Curt for supplying me with the C element and some advice.

Sounds good Rich!

hey I have a question for you.......did you have to defocus the blue a lot to get rid of the blue hump?
Did the defocussing affect the overall sharpness of the image?

Sorry for delay, been busy lately.
Yes I had to defocus blue quite a lot, picture still looks sharp from a distance but if you put the zone test pattern up it looks pretty bad the blue overlaps the other two colors quite a bit.
I was wondering what would be the effect of tightening the blue a bit have on the overall appearance.
Maybe some one else could chime in here with some thoughts on this.

Richard, I talked to other people here. They say that barring a CMS (color management system) a.k.a. a video processor with CMS features.........there is nothing much we can do about it.

If you are using a HTPC there are other options. There are software which will correct the blue hump WITHOUT you having to defocus! Now that sounds sweet! I'm gonna give that option a shot this weekend.......I do use a HTPC.

Hey, one more question......I have a G70 and I have looked at a few properly setup G90s.

Personally I did not see a HUGE difference between the picture quality of these two PJs. Sure, the G90 handles 1080p and the G70 does 720p best but other than that I could not warrant the extra expense.

Your comment about the upgrade from G70 to G90 makes me wonder exactly what improved in your opinion?
Could you please elaborate on what improved/changed?

I had the G70 for about 5 years when I got it it had done about 400 Hrs I set it up and to me 1080i HDTV and DVD 720X1440 line tripling driven by a Vigatec processor was the best I could get.
Now I have the G90 driven by a DVDO VP50 maybe its the better processing and the 1080P but it sure beats what I had previously, also you can get the focus tighter especially at the corners.
Also the grey scale tracking has helped, having the shadow end (Blacks) calibrated you see all the shades. (Previously I was always adjusting the brightness to get a good picture with the G70)
Now if I had the VP50 with the G70 and calibrated correctly that might have been a different story, but Kal's procedure certainly taught me a lot about tracking.
I still believe the G70 is a great Projector.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this.

I think the HTPC based system I have gives better results than a upscaling DVD player or a standalone HD disk player. That may be the reason that I feel a G70's pic is close to a G90s pic.

And sure........the proper greyscale helps too
