I'm a long time Curt newsletter subscriber and forum lurker both here and AVSforum.
I have an HTPC hooked up on a Marquee 8000. I've had this set up since mid-1998. Over the years I've upgraded my HTPC four times. I acquired the M8000 in 1998 with only 450 hrs. Now it has 3300 hours. Other than a HVPS upgrade from Tim in Scottsdale and VNB upgrade from Curt a few years back, the M8000 has been very reliable. I've done most of the recommended tweaks as well. Since late 2004, I've been travelling a lot. I spent less than 50% of my time at home. To make a long story short, I've probably only put about 50 hours watching in that 4 years time.
Anyway in the last month, I've been slowly trying to update my system. I bought a new HTPC with combo HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drive. I also bought an HDLeeza for my old LaserDisc, DVD collection and SD-cable TV. I hooked this up on my M8000 via HDFury. For such an old PJ, I was still able to tweak it to resolve 1080P/60hz. Sure, its not as sharp as the plasma and LCD displays I have, but for a 14 y.o. analog CRT pj projecting on 120-inch screen, its not bad.
With this set up, I was able to watch 2 Bluray disc in one day. The next day, it powered up but after 10 minutes, it went dark. No visible light output on the tubes what so ever. The green menu wont even come up. I though, oh no, its the HVPS again. After 30 minutess of powering up and down, the M8000 came back to life. This time, the picture was all screwed up. The red and green tubes seem to be doing the same thing, but the blue was showing a totally different picture.
Please check out the screenshots below. I isolated the RGB by pulling the power out of the junction box that powers the individual CRT. What do you guys this is wrong with my M8000? Is it worth repairing?
I'm debating if I should just repair my M8000 projector or just buy a Sanyo PLV-Z2000 that is currently on sale. I will probably would not put much hours into this new upgrade, be it the M8000 or the Z2000. I'd say 20 hours max.

Guessing phase, signal lock related problem, but it is very unusual for it to affect the internal patterns too...

INteresting problem. Disconnect the ribbon cable between the convergence board and the motherboard and see if it goes away. I'd suspect the CLM or the HDM.

That's funny.
I forgot to mention one little tiny detail.  After 30 minutes of total darkness, I powered it up again and saw some smoke coming out of the front. That was when I started getting the genie picture. Sorry I could not pinpoint exactly where it was coming from.
The distorted crosshatch pictures were with all inputs disconnected.
I still want to fix this unless it will cost me a lot. Nevertheless, I went ahead and order the Z2000. I just want to see how those LCD pj looks. If I get my M8000 going again, I will probably just return the Z2000.

I also did not mention, since its in the other part of the house, but I had a minor flooding due to a burst pipe. The emergency flood company ran 18 industrial fans and 4 commecial dehumidifiers to help dry the damage area. The theater room is not affected at all with the flooding. Would all these fans cause the problem I'm having? I turned of all of the fans and fired up the pj, but its still the same.

Just get a cheap spare machine. There are plenty for sale and fix it cheap. I bought a complete working 8111 for about 3000 dollar. Most 8000 parts can be bought for way less..

I hope you meant to type "$300.", if not, where do you live so I can start selling projectors there !
The last few projectors I've seen actually SELL on ebay were a Vision 1 for just over $1000., two 8500's for $600. for both...
Projectors are cheap as dirt...

I do have a spare machine. The all three CRT tubes are in perfect condition so I was saving it for that. However, over the years, I did harvest the HDM, VNB and HVPS out of my spare pj.
Anyway update, I tried firing it up again. This time no more picture or the green menu. The "hfail" diagnostic red LED on the CLM is now lit. I did swapped the CLM from my spare machine. its the same thing. Same "hfail" light and still no picture.

Have you tried rubbing the projector vigoriously and wishing for an HDM?

if you have 3 perfect tubes then your choices are clear IMO. Send them to someone who can install the tubes into an 8500 with all the necessary tech service bulletins done to it.You will be stepping up both in pic quality and reliability. This swap shouldn't cost you more than $700. + return freight to you IMO . Of course if your technically inclined you could do it all yourself too. An 8500 with perfect tubes is a really good place to add a Moome HDMI internal expansion card for killer HD through Blue Ray or whatever.
Oh and if your 8000 has killed more than one HDM in a few thousand hours then I would suspect the LVPS (low voltage supply) has drifted on the 85VDC rail. This is adjustable with a trim pot in the back but a little bit PITA to do.
