I have a 6PGx with a PS3 and an HDFury. There are three things that I want to get, and I planned to get them in this order because it seems logical to me.

1. EyeOne LT
2. Box2200
3. point board

Im pretty sure Ill get the point board last, because I think it will give the smallest improvement. Im on the fence about the first two, though. Im leaning towards the EyeOne because I can use it to calibrate my other HDTVs that I watch MUCH more frequently than my PJ. The only reason for getting the Box2200 is for the gamma boost.

Basically, my question is which do you consider more important, gamma or white balance? I know that they work together to make the picture great, but what would you get first, taking into the account that you would use the EyeOne much more often? Well, not use it more often but use the benefit of having used it more often...you get the point.

White balance, then gamma, don't even bother with the point board.

Correct white balance will make the image better over all, and personally, I've noticed that correct white balance seems to increase the visible shadow details, perhaps because if greyscale is better defined, more variations in low level detail actually can be displayed.

Gamma boost really helps crt projector images, but it is a tiny change.

If your physical positioning is excellent, and you take a LOT of care in your setup, the point board isn't even necessary on a PG. Use a conservative raster size, not the totally maxed out one everyone here likes recommending, and it is a simple process to converge and focus your PG perfectly for long periods of stable use. There was a reason NEC engineers spec'd such conservative raster sizes(IMHO).

Yeah,

I found the point board a waste of time, get the set up right and you do not need it. When I first used a point board to correct things, I later found out that the regular convergence settings were off, after getting those right, the point board went unused. What's important to remember is, we are not experts at setting these PJ's up, so you need to revisit the settings quite a few times to understand them and how to get them perfect.

Maxing out the raster is a whole other story. What I found out about doing that is, your lenses screw you up. What you need is a set of matched lenses, or it throws your convergence off. I messed with everything that I could think of trying to fix miss convergence with maxed (and I mean maxed) out rasters. What I finally found out through trial and error was the lenses are not ground very consistent towards the edges. After I found this out, I did some swapping, rotating and shimming of the lenses to correct my convergence problems.

Ive redone the convergence a few times now, getting better everytime. I was always off in the corners, so this last time doing the convergence (takes a week with crying kids), I made the rasters a little smaller and found that it was mostly the green that was giving me the corner focus issues. I changed the scheimflug away from the factory specified settings and it improved my corner focus by a factor of 3. It still wasnt as good as the red and blue, but it is totally decent. I am moving in about 6 months, so I am hoping to perfect my convergence skills by then, before it goes in a dedicated HT.

I don't believe I ever used point. You can get away with it a little bit, but unfortunately it will cause banding.
