My wife calls me from Best Buy this morning because she's looking for a Blu-ray to buy me. I say, ehhh... not much out right now that I have to have. Check out the music discs.

First of all, the morons have all the music BD's mixed in with the music DVD's. So, if you want to browse through the 50 or so music BD's available on the market, you have to search through the 2,000 standard DVD's. Strike 1.

I list off a couple of the discs I'd be interested in... Yes - Live at Montreaux... Nope. Don't have it. David Gilmour?... Nope. Don't have it. Santana? Nope. Don't have it. Several copies of Shakira and Justin Timberlake... you want of those? Just kidding. She knows I'd sooner go out and clean the garage that watch Justin Timberlake. Strike 2.

Movies. The only couple of movies I was interested - Cloverfield, and a couple of others were $10 higher than Amazon, and they were ON SALE. The regular price was TWENTY DOLLARS higher than Amazon. $39.99 for a movie. Please. Strike 3. You're out. I told her to leave and just come home.

Instead, we'll order it from Amazon and I'll wait a week for it.

Last minute gifts are about the only time I bother going into the store anymore. Does anybody here buy at Best Buy, anymore?

Funny you ask this, walked in took one look at their Blu-ray prices today and walked out. Most of the disks are 1/3 higher then Amazon and 20-25% more then Walmart/Sams Club. I don't get it, why would anyone one buy there? Even the electronics are sky high.

Sams had a couple of the concert disks you listed for $17 and some change.

BTW this was a post to get off of 666 post. Glad I didn't hit that number on Friday the 13th.Shocked

Mike

Amazon.com 100%. Even though I'm in Canada. Everything else is more expensive.

Only if I'm killing time while the wife shops somewhere. Probably my last choice of places to buy. I get most everything online now. Amazon, Buy.com, etc.

I'll buy hardware there, but mainly in cases where I need stuff fast (video cards, hard drives) and then because it's cheap - my company gets tax free purchases and BB's hardware prices are low enough that it more than offsets shipping when you take tax (and time spent screwing around finding a low price, ordering, etc) off.

Yeah, I get hardware there sometimes. I'm typing this on an HP Pavillion laptop that I bought at BB for $600. Damn good machine for that price.

Best Buy is a festering boil on the Scrotum of home theatre. I can't think of anything more usless than buying from a store staffed by high School kids peddling gear based on a 30 minute traning session they went to 3 weeks ago. If your desperate for a cable or maybe need a PC card that afternoon then maybe it will do as a last resort.

Nice visual! Laughing

That's pretty much how I felt about it the other day, but I just couldn't sum it up in words quite so eloquent as yours, dragan.

I demoed the plasmas recently (not to buy, just to demo), but otherwise I never go there. Unless there's a really good sale on something, there's nothing at BB that you can't buy cheaper somewhere else.

But it seems everyone already knows that. Thumbs Up

it's a gift Laughing I used to walk throguh BB and CC just to feel sorry for all the poor fools getting fleeced there but now I find the whole experience just annoying as hell. it's a shame really because majority of people have the capacity to understand audio/video quality in relation to value for their $ but in the end convenience and a short cut to thinking always win out. Sad

It might also be time priorities. For some people it's probably worth saving fifty, a hundred hours of research and a chunk of ongoing time, to sacrifice 50% of the quality. A big honkin' major maker plasma with a bd player will look reasonably good out of the box, at any rate not unwatchable to average joe.

And average joe may just feel like it's not worth it.

A guy at work tells me that his neighbor got the go ahead for a living system and just went down to Best Buy and dropped $4000 on a plasma and speaker system.

I was disgusted at first but then I thought that these people don't know any better and it is pretty elitist of me to think that I could have helped them "enjoy" their purchase more by saving some money.

Then I was disgusted again.

He got a 42" Sammy LCD, Yammy 463 receiver and a klipsch quintet speaker system with all cables for $4000!

Yikes.

I agree. Not everyone views A/V as something important or interesting. Buying a TV is like buying a refrigerator or dryer. They may want something nice, but for the most part, it's just another appliance that a house has to have.

We've actually made several large purchases there in the last year or so. I had gotten to the point that I would not even go into a Best Buy, but our new local one has actually been pretty decent.

We bought our 46" LCD TV for the wife there. I did all the research and narrowed it down to a couple then took here there so she could see the ones on my list, as appearance was once of her top concerns.

I had price info from multiple sources, which my wife (who is a master negotiator) then used to get a great deal. As long as you know what you want and what you should pay you can do just fine there.

I also bought my current desktop, laptops for both the wife and kids, as well as our washer and dryer there. Maybe I am just lucky in that we seem to have a decent store. Of course it also helps that I don't listen to a thing they say about any of the products.

I'm not an elitist shopper in the slightest. I'll shop wherever I can get the deal I'm looking for.

I don't think your feelings of disgust are unwarranted. A cheap Korean LCD TV, a crappy Yamaha receiver and junk plastic Klipsch speakers (Klipsch makes some high end stuff too). I mean to drop 4 THOUSAND dollars on that is pathetic. I bet anyone here 5 bucks he will still be making monthly payments on this when the LCD breaks down the first time

let me guess, she was concerned with how it looked on the outside right? Wink

washers, dryers, frigerators, is fine but home theatre and Best buy are 2 planets that will never be in alignment.

Yep, which was fine with me, since I really consider it nothing more than another appliance. The saddest thing is that she probably watches as much SD on it as HD Rolling Eyes
