I have purchased a blu ray player and want to get serious about the convergence on the Sony. My question is how to adjust the convergence when imputing an external signal. any help thanks Brian

There's lots of reading on Sony setup if you do some searching...
Basically, you do a full setup as always, with no input (using the internal oscillator.) That's basically 480p you're setting up. Once you're happy with the results, save the registration data to all memory blocks. (long "memory" key press)
Then fire up the BD player and use a disc like DVE (convergence/geometry grid), and tweak the settings again at 1080i (best for 1272). Save the registration data only to that memory block. (short "memory" key press). Done.
Does that answer your question, or were you wondering about something more specific?

Thanks for response, i have done both of those several times. I thought i have read that it is best to use an external pattern to converge. I dont understand how to make the adjustments without using the internal pattern.

You do use the external pattern to converge - after you've used the internal pattern do a full setup.
If you try to clear everything and start from scratch right off with the external source, it will turn into a nightmare. I know because I've done it.

when i hold down the test button it goes to the internal patterns. is there a way to make adjustments to the test pattern via the blu ray player?

while beeing in registration mode, it needs a long press on a key to have the pattern disappear and the external source is displayed.
by my memory it is a long press on the test key... but not sure, it could be as well a long press on the setting you wish to use (as "size" for example).
I can't remember for sure but you may find it easyly with a couple of try.
of course "long press" mean keeping the finger on the key for about 3-4 seconds
anyway that's the way it works on a 1271 but I assume that's the same way for any 12xx.

A couple of bits of information - though I haven't had my 1272 for a couple or 3 years.
When you do the internal setup with no external video source the 1272 defaults to the internal frequency and you are setting up the default registration block - I think it is 4.
It is correct to do a thorough setup/calibration using only the internal patterns and then save those settings to all memory blocks as was previously stated.
THEN, if you plug in an external source, the projector will automatically switch to the registration block that corresponds to that external source frequency. At that point, if you choose to use the internal patterns, you will be making changes to registration block X not default registration block 4.
And as previously suggested a longer press of the TEST button will toggle you between the external image and the internal test patterns.
