G'day,

I'm sure I'm naive, but... I was in a TV department (David Jones for those in Australia) and saw a beautiful 50" plasma screen with really black blacks and playing their demo Full HD demo disk. The image and text was just so sharp and beautiful... (ps. where can I get one of those demos?!) This got me thinking why my PJ can't be as sharp as that.

I have a BD701 which does 1024x768. Then I thought well... that should be capable of 1080i right? But... 1080i is approx 1920 x 1080 scanned twice.... but my little barco is only 1024x768. So... then how does my barco fit 1920 lines on the screen? Does it show 960 lines... then the whole RGB raster shifts down a scan line and display another 960 lines?

So... theoretically (if the above is the case), then a Sony 1292 (2000x1600) for example should be able to do 2160i???

You know what? I'd be keen to see a reference section somewhere on Curts site that shows a section of the screen (say a 2'x2' area) with the same bit of image and a bit of text on it (say a movie with opening titles) that shows how sharp a pj can be starting from a couple of entry level machines, a couple of intermediate machines and a couple of high end machines. This would show us entry level people what we might be missing out on (and should be upgrading to !!!). It would also help us have a benchmark to what our machines should look like when set up properly (focus, astig, G2, etc) without expecting more from our machines than we should.

Cheers!

Have you read the CRT Primer/FAQ?
A CRT is not a fixed pixel device.

And it will look great with 1080i. DO IT!

The rated resolution of a CRT means just about nothing.

You can't really compare a pj to another like that. Still I would like to see such a list as well. It would however take a lot of understanding to look at such a chart and if you have that understanding you would not need the chart to begin with.

It is 1920x540 scanned each refresh.

That was its rating in a 4:3 raster. With excellent set up and maximized rasters, it can do closer to 1300 or so horizontal.

It can't. When you feed it 1920x1080i, you get overlap on the horizontal. YOu really can only do about ~1300x1080i. But, with most video content, it still looks pretty good, even with the overlap.

I'm not sure how you get this, but you'd have to define "2160i". The closest I know of is 4K dCinema resolution at 4096x2160p. A 1292 will not do anything close to 4096 horizontal.

Hmmm... thats interesting.... that means that in 4:3 (if it can do 1300 or so horizontal), and my computer CRT monitor is 1024x768 (or effectively 768 pixels horizontally), the display on my pj should be at least as sharp as my computer monitor right? If thats the case, then I think I need to further adjust my pj! But then again, if I had a computer monitor that was around 87" wide, then maybe it might not look as sharp either (in 1024x768). Hence the reason it would be great to have a benchmark or reference on this site to determine what I should be expecting with a properly set up machine.

If I have time tonight, I might plug my laptop into the pj and take a photo of the image at 1024x768, post it here and see if you folks think its ok.

Kevin.

The resolution is 1024 lines horizontal and 768 lines vertical.

All resolutions are stated horizontal x vertical, 1080p is 1920 horizontal x 1080 vertical (all odd and even lines shown together) , 1080i is 1920 horizontal x 540 vertical (shows odd vertical lines then even lines separately).
