Isn't that just a tad expensive ??
Why not wait till it doesn't sell, then make an offer closer to its "real" market value considering the current market. I mean, a Vision One sold for less than what you intend to pay for an ancient Sony....

What would you consider to be a fair value for a 1292 with minty tubes? Assuming that it is from an individual and not a respected reseller like Curt.

Who said anything about "fair" ?
Crt projectors aren't worth squat any more, and its a 12 year old piece of technology that, while very fine at resolving, is a pretty dim 9" projector(and yes, I have owned a couple of 1292's, so yes, I have seen them being dim in person...).
That price is what I paid for one of these 6 years ago when there WAS still a market. Aside from the 100 or so people who drop in here, there is very, very, very little interest left in these things...
But, then again, if you want it and can afford it, who cares if I think its too expensive...

I think its fair since trying to find a set of frankenyokes is very difficult if not impossible, and those can go for 500 a set then 500 for the lenses so 1000 bucks to me is bargain I just dont want to pay the shipping for a 250 pound PJ. Hence my offer to split it with someone, I was hoping they'd be closer to me so we could ship it to either my place or thiers and then just drive to pick up what the other doesnt want.

I don't see how the price you paid for a 1292 six years ago has any bearing on the discussion. From the sounds if it, you got a steal on a very high-end piece of industrial projection equipment - a machine that was probably "worth" at least 3 times what you paid for it then. So, what does that have to do with anything, now? Hell, I paid $700 for my first 1271 around the same time. Thinking about it some more, I'd say a 1292 for $1200 back then would have been a SMOKING deal.
$1200 for a 1292 may be a little high - or it may not. It all depends on the machine, the buyer(s) and the intended application (part out, resell, etc.). Your method is valid - it may not be a bad idea to let the auction run, then make the seller a lower offer. OTOH, it could sell and you could lose it. The seller may a have a deal with somebody local that it'll go to if it doesn't sell. It may get parted out. Who knows? The point is, "fair" is whatever the buyer thinks is "fair" and is therefore willing to pay, as long as that's still a number the seller will accept.
No question that the value has fallen way off on these machines, but that doesn't mean "nobody" is interested. Hell, my buddy and I just sold one 12xx within a few weeks of each other to local guys that were just getting into HT. They'd been to the stores and didn't like what they saw for $2000, but did like what they saw for $300. These were newbies - not old CRT guys.
One more thing... Considering that $1200 buys you complete unadulterated crap in a new digital, then maybe $1200 is a good value in a clean 1292. I tend to think so. I'd much sooner pay $1200 for a nice clean 1292 than I'd pay $2000 for any digital at that price point. That stuff is junk. So, maybe the value of these machines is actually better than you think.

This `1292 your talking about has been up before.it started out at $1500 and ran 2x.No one bought it either time. The fellow that has it is an AVS member. At the first time he had it there was another 1292 up on the bay with less then 800hrs on it with the same lens------I almost bought that one --it was also $1500

Told ya so.
Email him direct. Offer him whatever you're comfortable paying for the focus yokes, point out to him he's likely to get more for the plain tubes and separate lenses than for the whole projector, and also, will likely actually SELL the tubes and lenses...
Or just wait another month and buy the whole machine for $400......

I'm still looking for a blue 09mfx3 tube but shipping from the US makes it too expensive ($100)
Taxes here (vat) are calculated using the total value, so shipping is included
If I could find a 1292 like this one for $700 (€450!!) in Europe I would be very happy
André
A crazy German sells a 1292 for €2999 or more then $4500
