Alas, the 9PG owner selling these tubes was abusive to his poor projector. If only there was an ASPCCRTs....

No, that's really not too far off of the original specs. We just be smrter than the NEC engineers. Doug will disgree though..

With NEC's, it depends if you want rock solid, total focus and convergence or if you want a "full" raster.
Using NEC's spec'd throw distances result in a lesser amount of tube used than may be typical of most front projectors, but the trade off is that convergence and focus is perfect across the entire image. Focus and convergence become harder to maintain the farther from the center of the tubeface you get.
It is a preference, and like virtually all other aspects of crt projector setup, a compromise.
Personally, I prefer the slightly smaller raster in order to achieve perfectly uniform focus and convergence. *If* it was possible to get both, I'd choose that, obviously, but with NEC's, *typically* its not possible to get both.
