Check out this cool calculator:
http://home1.gte.net/res18h39/contrast.htm
For those of us with bat caves, the room reflectivity of .01 may be a bit too high. I like to put in something between .001-.005.
For those that don't know, the ANSI CR of your CRT is around:
AC - 80-100:1
LC - 120-150:1

Not to showcase my ignorance, but what do the numbers do for you after you've got 'em?

I wonder how they figure out room reflectivity? Are they saying .01% of the light makes it back to the screen?
Deron.

Well, they don't do much for you per se. You can vary the room reflectivity to see what impact that has.
It is more of an interesting analysis of ANSI CR and on/off CR and how they effect the whole range. It is interesting that a projector with very high on/off CR but bad ANSI CR (like a CRT) has a much greater contrast ratio on low APL scenes vs. a low on/off, high ANSI like a typical digital. You can sort of compare them and see where each has its "bang".

Gotcha. I'd like to see some ansi and on/off cr numbers for 35mm film. I suspect they're similar to crts...

Erik Garci came up with this about two years ago. It got a lot of play on the digital forum at AVS. Dave, this was championed by your BFF Darin.

Ahhhhh, my buddy. Actually, I can see why he championed it. Although he has been a digi-boy for a long time, he has always been emphasizing on/off as not inferior to ANSI (as so many of the digi-boys think). This demonstrates its importance of it in low APL scenes quite well.
