I am setting up my Sony 1272 and don't understand how to use the Gain control to help set white balance. The manual only mentions it when adjusting it for a particular source, and even then has you display the source rather than the test pattern (to match it with a CRT monitor.) It doesn't tell you how to set it absolutely.
Can anyone shed some light on this? (I saw Kal's primer, but I want to do this by eye.)

Kal's right, it's next to impossible to do a decent job of setting greyscale/white balance by eye. In the presence of a red cast, white will look green. In the presence of a blue cast, white will look yellow. The eye/brain does a great job of comparing two whites, but without some absolute reference, doesn't do a good job of judging absolutes.
All that said, if it's messed up already, then there isn't much risk in trying to make it better. Use the bias and gain controls to try to make the shadows and highlights as "white" as you can. The point is to try to remove as much color cast as you can - no greenish, blueish, yellowish, etc. tint. If there's a red, green or blue cast, remove some of one of those colors. If there's a magenta (pink) cast, add green or remove red and blue. If there's a cyan cast, add red or take away blue and green. If there's a yellow cast, add blue or take away red and green.
Without a colorimeter, or some calibrated source as a reference, you'll just be guessing to the best of your ability, though.
