Shopping for a PJ to replace my 1272 Sony.

Question- Can I use a G70 in the same postion my 1272 was at? It was ceiling mounted and I don't want to drill more holes in the ceiling. 100" screen

Best place to shop for a G70 is here: http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTforSale.shtm

Curt has one on the way in with low hours and may sell it "as is".

Different lenses so the throw will be slightly different. How much different, I don't know. To guesstimate the difference, load up both installation manuals and plug in your numbers and see what they both say. The difference will likely be very close to what you'll have to do ( assuming you had the 1272 installed in the right spot in the first place. Smile).

Just guessing, but wouldn't the G70 have a slightly shorter throw being LC?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the G70 should be only 3-4" closer. BUT, if you had the 1271 really pushed to the limit with maxed rasters, you may be able to mount the G70 in the same mounting location. I think you get a couple of inches simply by virtue of the G70 being longer (the distance from mount point to lens is longer on the G70). Anyway, mounting according to factory spec will be too far back, but you also don't want to go too close, either. Maybe be a touch more conservative with maxing rasters than you might be with some machines. Some guys have had problems with corner focus and geometry on machines with maxed rasters.

Follow-up. If you look at PJcalc, I think the difference is more like only 4" or so - as in 108" vs. 112". Again, I'm going from memory, but I had my 1271 a little on the short side. I put the G70 back up in the same place, and the throw is still shorter than spec. Rasters are not maximized, but are "conservatively large." I can get exact dimensions if you'd like.

EDIT - The bottom of my green lens is 120" from the screen. For reference, PJcalc says 127". My install required a tilt - dropping rear/raising front to correct the offset (i.e. my throw angle is shallower than normal.)
