Is it possible?
Why did Barco put 9" LC tubes in a 1609?

Why did they put 9 in a 1609s? Because that's just how they made it. Barco had some 1600 series to deliver a cheaper model for the less demanding market. It's just a 1209s with some software limitation and i think a few cheaper parts.

According to this site, the 1609 will not do 1080i or 720p. Is it possible to updgrade the software and parts and turn it into a 1209 so it will do HD?

What tubes does the 1609s use? I think this would be one of the major factors in a conversions. As for the lenses I'm not sure what is used but I'm pretty sure they are all plastic lenses. If it shares the same tubes and most of the same electronics I'd think it would be possible to do the conversion, one of my concerns would be the lenses and C-elements (make sure the housings are the same so it can use HD-10 lenses and proper C-elements.

BV1609s have 19LCP07 tubes and TOC 7 lenses.
60 MHz BW and weird scanning freqs makes conversion quite big project. About half of boards are different what 120* series have.

Nevertheless, the BV1609s makes a great chassis to convert a cheap 1208s/2 into a 1209s. Just find the tubes and lenses, modify the neck boards and you're good to go!
