Ok, it's been moved!

Not good enough!! I had a Vidikron VPF40 that never worked. Regardless it is better than the Sony 1020 and the Zenith 851. Where is the love?

It's really hard to take good screenshots. Mine always look a lot softer too.
I have to agree on one thing however: MikeEby's shot is definitely not anywhere near what I'd call 'sharp' - especially for HD! As I stated earlier it doesn't even look any better than SD (which is obviously true looking at the SD screenshot provided above).

I assumed he posted it because it was representative of what he sees on the screen--it would not be logical to post it otherwise. This is the main reason I've never posted screen shots--I can't get them to look at all like what I see in real life. |
Dave,
I think the actual screen looks way better than the images posted. Just for fun here is another shot. Yes it is soft too, but at least this has some detail, also I am not applying ANY sharpening other then the default value of 3 at the camera. They are shot in full manual RAW 5616X3744 except for focus then processed into an 8bit tiff full res then cropped and resized to 1920 wide and exported to a jpg using Paint.NET.
Time permitting what I really want to do is try several resolutions/refresh rates from 720p to 1080p non-interaced and interlaced, just to decide what looks best. Using an Image capture of the full frame like Jesse S posted to see how much picture data is being lost. I have no idea how a camera will handle the interlaced field it could be a total bust but at least we could put the whole screen shot debate to rest. Also these are the first screen shots I have ever taken so I’m still trying to dial them in.
Here is the data from the shot above.
File name ScreenShot_0060.CR2
Camera Model Name Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III
Firmware Firmware Version 1.0.6
Shooting Date/Time 3/16/2008 00:48:36
Tv(Shutter Speed) 1.6Sec.
Av(Aperture Value) F6.3
Metering Modes Evaluative metering
Exposure Compensation 0
ISO Speed 100
Lens EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Focal Length 42.0 mm
Image size 5616 x 3744
Image Quality RAW
Flash Off
White Balance Auto
AF mode One-Shot AF
Picture Style Standard
Parameters Tone Curve : Standard
Sharpness level : -
Pattern Sharpness : -
Contrast : 0
Sharpness : 3
Notice the shutter speed is 1.6 seconds; I don't know how well the image on a CRT will hold still during that long of an exposure, perhaps this is the reason the shots are so soft. Any slight movement in the image would destroy the sharpness. I might try opening up the lenses and raising the shutter speed. I also could raise the ISO but then but this would probably induce more noise. I thought I used manual focus but the data from the camera said auto.
This is the full frame.
I’m not far too from Cliff’s and I we have already talked about taking some screen shots after he returns from Australia & completes some maintain on his stack. Those shots could as a benchmark. I would think with this camera we could probably detect the openings in his AR screen even while shooting the full frame. BTW I cannot recall anyone except me posting full res screen shots, perhaps this is the reason why.
BTW we are getting outside the topic I think we are outside of the topic of this thread & perhaps I could start a new thread. “Are Screen Shots of Any Value” and continue this debate there.

Holy crap! A 1Ds MK III?? That's an $8000 Camera and a $1200 lens. I just don't get why you can't get good screenshots with that setup.
I have a 30D and the same lens and my screenshots look like yours. Hence the reason I never post any. They're just too soft. My other shots (real people, etc) all look great.

LOL…Don't get all excited it’s not mine...My brother is a commercial photographer, I am only borrowing it. The liveview software is really neat for doing screen shots though.

Yes, I think PowerDVD runs with to much saturation but it is adjustable. I always wonder how one calibrates that? I use an HTPC. My gray scale might be a little red too.
The top shot is from Clarence's G90. The second is mine with only saturation reduced. The geometry is also slightly different.
It looks like we both caught the same frame what are the chances? I just ran across his pic on AVS.

After looking at the 2 shots I think they are off by 1 frame Remy's eyes are different.
