my 9pg + is acting up. for some reason this thing doesnt want tpo accept my input. i use the same video source all the time and sometimes i have to select the numbered input like 20 times to get it to accept and play it. WTF?!?!?! its really irritating. the source is my xbox 360. i tried taking another unit in there and its doing the same thing. sometimes it even says no input.

Is that input set as "default" or "temporary"? How are you feeding the PG? HD Fury or component video to VGA through a transcoder or both? Have you cleared out any unused memory slots?

I have the same problem with my 360 and my Nec 6PG. I always thought it was a poor system board, but I have just lived with it. When it happens, I usually just create a new memory block, and copy the settings from the old memory to the new one. I have like 4 redundant xbox 360 memory blocks on my 6pg because of this occuring.

I run my 360 directly into the 6PG via a VGA cable btw. 720p resolution.

Is this "UNRECOGNIZED SIGNAL?"
If it is, and if you compare a newly created input to the formerly working input, I think you'll find that the one of the two sweep frequencies is off by 0.1 (greater or lesser.)

IF this turns out to be the case, it's the oscillator board. (The flip-up board with the big heatsink that covers the R & G tubes.) I had precisely this failure mode and the correction was the oscillator... IIRC it was Mark_A_W or Doug Baisey (or both) that identified the problem as being dried out (out of spec) electrolytic caps on that board.

It's called the Deflection board on a PG, but yes, it does contain the Oscillator circuits.

I think it was Doug and Marc (not me, Mark with a K).

ok i work in an elec shop so which of these caps needs to be replaced? that can be done quite easily. are there any writeups on this? ya sometimes i get the unrecognized input too. it is a component to an AA converter to 5bnc into the pg

Yes, it was me. The small caps around the oscillator IC need to be checked and replaced as needed. Some can often be seen leaking.

I can look at a board and rattle off some location numbers if needed, but testing and replacing every cap in the area is the best way to find this. Leaky caps will cause a lot of drift in the oscillators causing no signal lock and even horizontal tearing.

I have the same problem occasionally with my PG Xtra where I will need to re-enter the signal. This happens every month or two, and a copy of the previously good entry to a new memory location solves it.

Marc, Is the oscillator IC the one at the top right in this image surrounded by the little caps? just guessing. I think I will give this a shot by just replacing all caps that are recommended in the vicinity if you think thats a good idea(I dont have a cap tester)

Also I remember Mark_A_W recommending the replacement of one of the huge caps on this board as well to remedy PS buzzing? While I have the board out and the Weller warm I may as well do this one too.

If anyone can recommend a good source for replacement caps I would appreciate the help.

Thanks

Dan

Yes, that's the IC.

If it doesn't buzz, leave the cap alone.

Marc
