Some real pics...

It's got an -02 VIM and orbiting RGB2 card.

You can see from the side view that the pivot bracket in the RP chassis was pretty well thought out. It was stiff as all heck, with a shoulder screw pivot point and socket-head-cap-screws fore and aft to fix the angle.
The pivot also has a nice feature... a tall stop on the bottom half that allows one person to safely pivot the PJ to level for service work.

Tube closeups with heavy gamma to follow.

The tube closeups followed by their gamma'd equiv. Gamma is WAY low... 0.20 on Irfranview, to bring out this wear.

The small vertical rectangle lower left on the Blue worries me a little, but by eye the wear is virtually invisible.

A little fungus to deal with too...

And, just for laughs... The trailer that hauled the Retro IV home.
The Retro IV is in there, under the tarp.

Yes, my VW Jetta TDI (diesel, Turbo Direct Injection) towed this trailer 875.2 miles, including the Retro chassis and 9501LC in the trunk through the Blue Mountains, Blue Ridge mountains and Poconos. At times there was 20' visibility and driving rain in the Poconos... all I could do was tuck into the draft of a semi and hope I would not get sandwiched by another truck from behind.

Heywood, although way off topic, I've been curious about this for awhile. Your user ID "Heywood Jablome" is really a cute way of saying "Hey would you blow me?"

So, given this forum is almost exclusively male, and I've noted a homophobic undercurrent here, why would you be soliciting oral sex here?

I solicit Oral Sex at every opportunity, but never from guys! Very Happy

As for homophobia: I, personally, fear nothing. I've been hit on in mens rooms (at Northeastern University notably, but once or twice more recently) and am able to rebuff that manner of attention courteously, and believe myself able to debate and converse with anybody about any topic.
Really, I'm put off by nothing... I've had serious discussions about the merits and challenges of various lifestyles that society has declared "fringe" and believe myself the better for it.

Regarding the name: I'm "jtnfoley" on AVS and was an early-adopter of curtpalme.com/forum. I was told of its' existence by Stefuel back when he was "G. Howie Phartz" here... I think this forum was less than three weeks old.
At the time there was a serious anti-AVS feeling here due to the then-draconian moderation of THAT CRT forum.
I just never got around to asking Kal to change my name, and it's kinda growing on me!
I spotted this name probably 10 years ago on an email that went around... it was a scan of a newspaper Legal Notice of Name Change... Somebody was apparently changing their name from something common to Heywood Jablome and the joke always stuck with me.

I always had a laugh for years about that name, We used to announce that on the PA at high school as well as " mike Hunt " , BUT I never pondered it as much as you seem to Dave Smile and I never thought of it as a ""cute"" way of asking males to suck me off like Dave seems to associate it with.

You have to appreciate being Texan Dave has to be more subtle and this is a big step for him .

The word "would" makes it a question. "Hey would you blow me?" A question has an audience. The readers of this forum are the audience. The readers of this forum are almost exclusively male. Ergo, the question is addressed at males here. You don't understand this?

None of that did I find odd or offensive. What makes it odd is the number of homophobic comments I've read here. So, I was just curious why he'd pick that. He's answered.

I'm actually from NY but in TX. Secondly, if you are in the right section of Dallas, you don't need to be subtle. As an aside, I'd have to say, this is one of your less creative attacks on me--pretty weak and disappointing.

I know It was weak Smile It was not an attack!! just a half assed attempt at some humour , but I was wondering where you were coming from out of the blue with your comments .

IT was a joke as I kind of thought your comments to BLOW ME were Smile

I would think a person who makes off handed PERSONAL comments about people all the time that you would have a thicker skin. I was wondering if you possibly had a mild case or turrets and could not help yourself Smile

If you found my comments to be more offensive than you asking someone why there were asking guys to blow them well You are more sensitive than I thought. are you sure you are from NY and not SanFran Smile

I'm thrilled about what I hope and believe will be my last CRT projector: The end of Upgraditis (until and unless digitals can compete...) And sad to see both of my threads spiral into the off-topic toilet. *sigh*

Looks like you got the best of the deal. That projector appears to be in great condition for the price.

I think you should put "f*ck off" in your signature, maybe it would help stave off some of the less crt related posts ?

I agree, how did we get into this ugly homo-phobia topic. Sad
Lets stick the OT, which is helping Haywood with his 9500. I think the first thing order of business is to see if the machine powers up. Then check that critical P14 voltage. My experienec has been that guv liq doesn't get rid of good working PJ's, so a dead tube or blown HVPS is a strong possiblity on this unit. Hopefully those check out and Heywood can move on to replacing some caps in the video chain, new Glycol, and a Red c-element would all be top of my list.

Thanks for returning us to topic... sincerely.
The PJ did power up, at least the green tube: Menus were prominently displayed in the GL pictures for both this projector and the one Bruce 09 won.
Setting scan for "table, front" followed by runtime and P14 are first on my checklist... The chassis is c.1998 so I need to check whether its' pre- or post- 31 August.

Don't worry about only the green showing anything, unless you hit the # button for the internal test patterns, there was no cause for the other tubes to light.

I'd bet hours are under 2000, going by the amount of visible wear. 1998 is a great vintage, you should have a clear winner with that pj.. ... ....

So far so good... About 21k hours, 6000ish CRTs ON. Output with test patterns is strong from all three tubes, tho the proof will be in the greyscale.
I noticed that there is a full-white screen... I'm going to bring my test screen in from the garage and see how that slightly darker area lower left looks.

Those tubes are fantastic for 6000 hours use. Either they must have had a black screen saver, or it must have been really conservatively setup, or the tubes in it were changed...

What do 6k hour tubes usually look like, the tubes in my Marquee 8000 looked that good or better at 5k hours

Also remember this was run in a RP setup on a small screen so it would need less brite and contrast that our setups on 8' screens

Just because the counter says 6K tube hours doesn't mean they were projecting light for all that time. Then again, in an RP setup, the contrast and brightness can be really low. I've got my RP BG808s with 41,600 hours on it, and brightness and contrast are well under 50, driven by a Faroudja NR at factory defaults. I'm sure the tubes have been changed at least once, but there's no wear on them, and other than a bit of convergence drift, the chassis is solid.

I've bought several retros that were in great shape. I've bought a number of non-retro's that were good, and two that were horrid complete piles of junk.

I bet the retro cabinets are retired because they're easily replaced by smaller, more modern equipment. The CRT front projectors that are still in service now are in specialty installations so probably won't be retired unless they break. I'd be willing to gamble more on a retro, like Heywood wisely did.

Edit: Keep in mind, of course, that Barco and Ampro retro cabinets are good only for parts if you don't want to use them as retro's. They have a different chassis, physically, for the retro units. They make good tube and board donors, though, if you have the time and space to deal with them. I certainly don't have the time any more.
