Slightly off topic:
So people are constantly talking about the future Blu-ray and how they think Sony's going to screw us all over, but we have to remember that while Sony founded the initial technology behind Blu-ray, it's not their technology now to do as they please. It's now owned and managed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).
The BDA board of directors is comprised of the 18 Blu-ray Disc founder companies:
Apple Inc.
Dell Inc.
Hewlett-Packard Company
Hitachi, Ltd.
LG Electronics
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic (Matsushita Electric)
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics
Samsung Electronics
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
Sun Microsystems
TDK Corporation
Thomson SA
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Warner Home Video Inc.
"Companies participating in the Board of Directors are active participants of the format creation and key BDA activities. They are selected from the Contributors by election. The board sets an overall strategy and approves key issues. A board member can participate in all activities and attend all meetings. The Blu-ray Disc Founder companies will make up the initial Board of Directors. Annual fee: $ 50,000"
Then there's the 65 contributors:
Adobe Systems
Almedio Inc.
Alticast
Aplix Corporation
ArcSoft, Inc.
ATI Technologies Inc.
Atmel Corporation
AudioDev AB
Broadcom Corporation
Canon Inc.
CMC Magnetics Corporation
Coding Technologies GmbH
Cryptography Research Inc.
CyberLink Corp.
DATARIUS Technologies GmbH
DCA Inc.
Deluxe Media Services Inc.
Dolby Laboratories Inc.
DTS, Inc.
Electronic Arts Inc.
Esmertec
Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd.
Fujitsu Ltd.
Gibson Guitar Corp.
Horizon Semiconductors
Imation Corp.
InterVideo Inc.
Kenwood Corporation
Lionsgate Entertainment
LITE-ON IT Corporation
LSI Logic
MediaTek Inc.
Meridian Audio Ltd.
Metro Goldwyn Mayer
Metta Technology
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co.Ltd.
Mitsui Chemicals Inc.
Moser Baer India Limited
NEC Electronics Corporation
Nero AG
Optodisc Technology Corporation
Paramount Pictures/Viacom (exclusively supporting HD DVD effective 20 August 2007)
Pixela Corporation
Prodisc Technology Inc.
Pulstec Industrial Co., Ltd.
Ricoh Co., Ltd.
RITEK Corporation
ShibaSoku Co. Ltd.
Sigma Designs Inc.
Sonic Solutions
Sonopress
Sony BMG Music Entertainment
Sony Pictures Entertainment (Columbia Pictures, Tristar Pictures Screen Gems).
STMicroelectronics
Sunext
Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd.,
Texas Instruments, Inc.
Universal Music Group
Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC)
Visionare Corporation
Zentek Technology Japan, Inc.
ZOOtech Ltd.
Zoran Corporation
""Contributors are active participants of the format creation and other key BDA activities. They can be elected to become a member of the Board of Directors. A contributor can attend general meetings and seminars, and can participate in Technical Expert Groups (TEGs), regional Promotion Team activities, and most of the Compliance Committee (CC) activities. Membership requires execution of Contribution Agreement and must be approved by the Board of Directors. Annual fee: $ 20,000"
So to think that Sony can just "do what they want" now is well, just not understanding how this all works. IMHO, people are panicking for nothing.

Sony has significant pull with the BDA (as the founder) and will continue to for several years. Do not kid yourself and think that BDA will act as independently as the DVD Forum did/would.
Sony has many avenues in which they can screw consumers and have proven by their history they will exploit those avenues whenever they can.

Hey, I'm just like everyone else now. If I want HD on a shiny little disc, I just have to bend over and let Sony give it to me up the ...

And I think the consumer loses. But time will tell if blu ray actually makes 2.0 players upgradable.

So Paramount's now made the official Blu-ray announcement as well. Just leaves Dreamworks.

Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 03:36 AM ET
The last domino of the format war has fallen: Paramount has officially announced it will align with Blu-ray and begin releasing titles on the format.
"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the studio said via a statement issued Wednesday to The Hollywood Reporter.
"As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."
The studio did not issue any further details regarding a timeframe for the transition, nor any specific title announcements.
Also absent in Paramount's statement was any mention of subsidiary DreamWorks, although it is widely expected that the company (including DreamWorks Animation) will follow its corporate parent and begin releasing titles on Blu-ray.
Paramount's statement follows two days of silence by the studio, after primary HD DVD-backer Toshiba's announcement early Tuesday that it would drop its support of the format. Only hours later, Universal Studios confirmed a move to Blu-ray, leaving Paramount as the sole HD DVD-exclusive studio yet to declare its future plans. |

Since Paramount owns Dreamworks, I don't think there's anything left. I think it's official - Hollywood in its entirety is now supporting Death-ray.

Wow, I forgot all about those boxes!!! Recorders, man! Toshiba had already announced HD-DVD recorders and was shipping them in Japan, I believe. Any word on whether the BD camp has a set-top recorder anywhere on the horizon?
