DO NOT BUY "REBUILT" TUBES.

If you have enjoyed the super sharp, great images you get from an NEC, don't buy a "rebuilt" tube. Seriously.

I've had experience with "rebuilt" tubes, they SUCK. Period. They should not be considered an option.

They are soft, have poor focus, and wear incredibly fast(under 100 hours for wear to be easily visible...).

I believe the only US supplier of tubes still has "new" tubes suitable for an NEC. They are the only ones you should consider.

Ok..You made your point Smile ...Who is the only US supplier for new and what do they cost?

Mike

VDC.

Not sure of the cost, sorry.

Well, I can only speak based on my personal experience, but it was a terrible, terrible one. VDC rebuilds were pretty much the worst tubes I've encountered. Low light output, terrible focus(comparatively) and burn burn burn.

And again, personally, VDC, while being great people to deal with, were largely incompetent. Mistake after mistake after mistake. I won't ever buy from them again if at all possible...

Others perceptions of their experiences will vary, obviously....

I thought rebuilds were the only option available unless you lucked up and found someone with a new unopened box. I checked VDC's website but they don't have prices listed for the Panasonic tubes. I can only imagine that they want a pretty penny for them.

Here is part of a reply from VDC as of last August 2007. I still haven't ordered the tube yet but I better get a move on. I was holding off hoping that I would come across a LC 9" unit but I think pretty much all the CRT's are cleaned out of this part of the country. I hope availability hasn't changed since then.

Regarding the P16LJE08 tubes we have new tubes available and the price is $695.00 each plus $100.00 core charge if we can not recycle your old glass. We will need your old tube sent in first so we can remove the mounting hardware, glycol chamber, and anode lead from the old tube so we can install onto the new tube.

Regarding the P16LJE09 tubes, we can rebuld these for $495.00 each plus $100.00 core charge if we can not recycle your old glass.

That's about what I was thinking for price. I guess if you have a good working projector then spending $600-$700 for a new tube every 4 or 5 years is not that big a deal considering the return you get.

I got the tube back in tonight and put everything back together. Crossed my fingers and hit the power switch. So far it looks okay and nothing has blown up or shorted out! I let it run for about an hour but really did no adjustments. I ran through some test patterns just to see how the lines and dots looked and so far so good. Tomorrow I will hang the projector again and then start with phase and raster centering to see where things are.

So, now we find out if there is a difference between an 1100 and 852?

I don't expect much difference. It was just a newer cleaner projector than my 110 and a good set of tubes between the two of them. I'm anxious to see how MCAT works. Not that it's a substitute for good convergence but I will try it.

Well, go in with an open mind and report what you find.

If you expect them to be the same, then they will be.

If you expect the 852 to be better, then it will be..

You need your wife/brother/mate to adjudicate. I usually use my brother to keep me in check Smile

I find my wife to be a great judge. She thinks I'm crazy with all this projector crap, if SHE can see a difference, then you KNOW its real...

Yeah, my wife doesn't sugarcoat anything and will tell me if she thinks it looks like shite! She also is a graphic designer so she has a keen eye for convergence or "registration" as she calls it. As of typing this now I spent about 4 hours with it last night and my first impression is that I have the 852 looking better already than I had the 110 in months. Need much more time with it but so far it looks promising.

Well, perhaps I spoke too soon. I'm now having synch problems for some reason. Looks like the scrambled mess with intermittent picture flashing on and off. It finally displays an image but with lots of noise in it, horizontal lines and not centered. You can't see the menus but I can tell that they are coming up. Just great. Doing some reading now and came across some things about system boards. I checked the board in my 110 and it's a different part number. Bummer. Now what?

Take note on the grayscale and tracking. If you know the owner see what he was feeding it while your checking it out. Dont know why it doesnt have the color corrected lenses that came on it new but might ask about that also. Doug

How many days did you run it out checking for problems when doing the signal tests? Doug

Ohhh...yeah...not long. I pretty much decided it was okay after I did the tube swap. I have never run into this before and the projector never exhibited this behavior when I had it on the floor running (I did do that for several days with no problems like this). I have not deleted anything in the projector.

What are you using for a signal? Perhaps a cable issue?

Toshiba HD-A2 player, SA-8300HD cable box. Everything is running 1080i out to my HDMI reciever and through an HD Fury and RTC2200 transcoder. Exact same setup as my 110 was using.
