Well it looks like I may have no choice in doing the fan mod on my G70. The fan behind the red tube has become squeaky lately and I'm not sure how much longer it will last.
I'm thinking of doing the fan mod posted on this site but I am concerned about overheating, if anyone has a recommendation for quiet fans that will move enough air I will be glad to hear them.
I also seem to recall Terry doing some mods on a G70 that consisted of cutting away the fan grille that is between the fan and the card cage. I'm thinking of trying this too if it will make a significant difference in noise level or airflow.
Advice? Recommendations?

I thought of doing the same thing, I didn't know somebody else had done it or considered it. Do you have a link?
I bought replacement fans and purchased what I thought would be an upgrade. They appeared to be the same SilentX fans but with fluid bearings but it turned out that they also have a built in temperature sensor and speed controller with made it incompatible with the speed sensing circuit in the g70.
So, I notice when I pulled one of the fans from the g70 and let it run outside the machine, the fan was nearly silent. Nearly as quiet as the new ones I had ordered and certainly better built. I think a majority of the noise is being generated by the air blowing through the grating.
So who is going to first to hack up their g70?
I've gotten good results cutting sheet metal with a dremel and fiberglass cutoff wheel but it produces allot of debris and I wouldn't want to to do it around all the electronics. Has anybody seen if there is a reasonable way to remove the grating assembly to do the work outside the projector?

The debris will likely short something. Use tin snips to cut it or take the chassis apart. It's alot of work but keeps the metal shavings away from the electronics.

Hey Erik, did see this thread?
Help G70 Fan Mod and now intermittent shutoff and error code
I'm definitely not doing the fan mod. First, because I don't think it accomplishes much in the way of noise (since, as you indicated, most of the noise is generated from turbulence around obstructions rather than from the fans themselves) and second, because Curt feels it decreases the reliability and longevity of the machine. Those two things together are enough to keep me away. I decided to just replace my OEM fan instead of replacing with an after-market fan, and will simply proceed with my hushbox plans and hope that does the trick.
If you can't do a hushbox, then I'd look at the chassis mods (removing the grating) before I started replacing fans.

EDIT - I just PM'd the OP in that thread to see if he has any more issues since installing the larger SilenX fans. I'll post in that other thread if/when I get a reply.

SC,
I will be removing the grating when I do the fan mod. Right now I'm not set on using any one type of fan but would like to find on that is a little quieter than the stock fans are.
Has anyone had luck oiling the fans? If I could remove the squeak then I wouldn't really have a need for new fans, but I'm guessing the fans are "lubed for life" and can't be messed with.
