I can hear things power on, but the tubes do not light up. I know it's not worth much, but I'd like to fix it and give it to the kids or the parents. The thing has perfect tubes. No wear at all. Parting it out is an option, but if it can be fixed easily I know the kids would love to game on it. For sure I'd rather bring it back to life than toss it into the landfill.
I have no idea what is wrong. Maybe it's something easy to repair? A blown fuse? A board?

Does the set stay powered on, or does it shut down again after powerup?

Also will it produce a test pattern?

Did it used to work for you or is this a new (to you) projector?

Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick replies.
Curt, the set powers up and then shuts down.
CORRECTION. It powers up and does NOT shut down. When powered up there is a high pitched whine that comes from the projector.
Macqyver, it did produce a test pattern, but not now.
Clarence, It used to work. I know it's only a 7", but I really enjoyed the image it produced.
Thanks again for the help out.

Yep... I used to have a couple of 1031s. I'm glad to see them keep running as long as possible. I just wanted to rule out all of the troubleshooting things if you'd never gotten a picture out of it... could be simple switch or source. But if it used to work and now it doesn't, then that's a pretty big clue for us to skip past the easy stuff.

Can you hear the static charge of the high voltage when you turn it on?

macgyver, I cannot hear the crackle of the high voltage. What sound it makes is more like a high pitched sound. The red light near the blue tube also comes on.

If you dont hear the static charge then most likely there is no high voltage. You can verify this by turning the briteness control to full, Locate the focus block w/ screen controls. Turn on the projector and turn the screen controls up to see if it produces a raster. If no raster on full adjustment on all 3 tubes then no high voltage. Turn the screen controls back to where they were before you started in case you fix it you dont want them coming on full blast. If you find there is no high voltage you are now reguired to have some experience in electronics for your problem could lie in many places. Could be as simple as a bad solder joint or a blown component. Even is its a blown fuse, usually something has blown it, however not always. I would at least give it a good look over for any fuses that maybe blown. You could get lucky.

That red light is a shutdown indicator light, and USUALLY the set will shut down completely, incl the fans. The fact that you're hearing a high pitched squeal usually means that something is loading down the set. Again, usually it's an overload on the power supply, which then activates the red LED, and hte power supply shuts down.
THe fact the set keeps running leads me to think the following:
-power supply shutdown feature has gone bad on top of your short problem.
-HV splitter/quadrupler is bad, causing a load on the power supply but not enough to shut it down.
Disconnect the three red HV leads going from the splitter to the tubes and see if the squeal goes away. If so, reinsert each HV lead to see if one or two tubes fire up. YOu might have a shorted/cracked tube. I have spare HV parts for the set. Brad, I'm also putting a box of 1031 parts together for ya..

Thanks Curt. I'll give that a try when I get home. Maybe I can narrow down the problem, get the part from you and get it up and running. That's one thing I like about CRT. They can be repaired.

Curt,
I just pulled the three red HV leads from the splitter, fired up the projector and it still has the high pitched squeal. The red light is still on as well. What should I try next?
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

I'm guessing an HV transformer/splitter problem. Shoot me an email at curtpalme@shaw.ca and I can set you up.
Cheers!
