Okay, now the ultimate insult to everyone on here. What do you all think about the Sony VPL VW60 projector? Sorry, I know it's weak but if I get frustrated and give up on it; I may sell my G70 and get the VPL VW60. It seems to be the best one for the money.
This should be fun.
I really do hope I get to like tweaking the pj because I can tell you I am extremely anal and I won't stop until I get it right.

It will be brighter and sharper but pretty much everything else about it sucks.

Wouldn't the JVC RS-1 for about the same money be a better choice?
Not everyone is cut out to be a CRT PJ owner. In fact, most people aren't. Don't feel bad if it turns out to be more than you can handle.

| Quote: | Erik,
How does one learn how to access and use Key Balance and Pin Balance without reading the manual? It took me a while to understand them AFTER reading the manual. |
It goes something like this,
Hit button and observe the effect on the screen during adjustment
Why just last week I finally discovered the mystical uses of the reset button, up until this point I hadn't even noticed it on the remote.
It would have been much faster and easier if I had just read the manual, but now I have a sketchy and incomplete understanding of how it works so that must be worth something...

Well, you have to hit the same button twice to get into the balance mode. What on the screen tells you to push the button twice?
Erik, you may be one of those people that aren't aware of the balance modes.

Sorry to go off topic here and when i say this i own a G70 and am happy continuing on the CRT track now that ive seen the moome hdmi card but ..... it seems that when someone just mentiones the word digital , they get totally pounced on and lets face it , DROPPED from this group and treated like they seriously have commited a crime .
I find Phils post very relavent and do also understand that CRTs are not for everyone , sometimes its just nice to sit down and watch a movie without always having something in the back of your head nagging you on how the CRT setup . When we sit down to watch a movie , my wife ALWAYS says shell be in in an hour because she knows i will always be tweaking something and lets face it guys , who isnt having a slight tweak here and there allot of the time before a movie .
Anyway , once again sorry to drift off topic here but im not a big poster in this forum but a huge reader here of posts and as i said , its just nice to finally see someone post someone genuin good luck on going to the dark side and in all honesty i second Phils comments 100% . ( im also sure i am going to get bagged here about this but bad luck to me ... lol ) .

I'm an Analog nut but hey if you like digital and it just works you can do that too. There is something to be said for just sitting down and fianly watching a movie

First of all, have you tried the excellent suggestion of setting the STB into 720p mode? Sure the projector is set up for either 720p or 1080i. I didn't see you reply to that post.
Second, it's not terribly hard to learn this stuff. To get into the service manual press this sequence of buttons:
Enter Enter Up Down Enter
Then you will be asked if you would like to enter the service mode. Select Yes. Now all those buttons on the bottom if the remote will actually do something.
Start with turning off the Red and Blue tubes (Cut Off buttons... lower left on the remote). Then hit "CENT" (extreme lower left button) and "G" in the Adjust selector (ADJ). Center the cross hatch in the center of your screen with the arrow buttons.
Next turn on Red (press Cut Off R again) and center the Red on the Green. Repeat for the blue.
After that press "Normal" (Upper Left under Pic Mute) to view your source again. Does at least the center look ok now?
This is really just the very tip of the iceberg, but it may get you something at least close to watchable. If this process seems daunting then it's time to either hire some help or go digital.
Good luck.

A G70 is fairly new and shouldn't drift that much that it requires constant tweaking. It should be fairly stable within 10-20 minutes of turning it on. If not, it's likely not been set up correctly (ie: some of the controls/adjustments are being pushed too far causing instability).
Some older projectors (early to mid 90's) will drift more and can be fixed by replacing a large # of capacitors. I did this with my previous Barco 800 from 1991 that had 26000 hours on it. It would consistently drift slowly over the first few hours of use (annoying) so I recapped the whole thing for about $100. Then it became rock solid again: After a 30 minute warmup it was always stable.
My current projector's much newer: Barco Cine8 series from 2001. I'm as fussy as the next guy here and I only do a 5 minute very minor tweak twice a year as the seasons change. Then I don't touch it again for 6 months. Seriously. I turn it on and convergence is almost spot on right away - enough that nobody but me notices. After 10 minutes it's bang on and stays that way until I turn if off.

Just for comparison, my old Sony 1271 (1990-ish?) red convergence is always off by 1/8" or so (a full line and some change) when I first turn the projector on. Within 15-20 minutes though, it's drifted back into position. I assume the deflection coils are not tight on the tube neck/against the bell, or something in the convergence circuit isn't up to spec until it's warm.
Either way, I don't really NEED to mess with convergence as long as I fire the projector up 10 or 15 minutes before we're ready to watch. If I do, it's because I'm super-anal and even then, I only spend about 1 minute on it - then it's back to watching movies.

Erik | LOL very much my first experience with G70 set-up. IT was a real white-knuckly ride as I literally tried to crush to remote with my bare hands.

. | well lets face it, if you are coming here to brag about your new Gray maker your not going to make any new firends. I really don't think people get "pounced on", matt is still welcomed here althoguh with a good deal of friendly ribbing. The only time I or others get really pissed and hostile is when a new person comes here (or AVS) asking about CRT and a few regular forum members jump in and start saying thing like "it's not worth it, just get a digital". If your going to say sh*t like that then do it in another forum. Anyway, if you think we're hostile here just try mentioning CRT on another forum.

Most forum members are reasonable, tolerant people. If someone wants to go digital, I think most members are ok with that. That just leaves more CRT PJs for the rest of us!

A bad DC board caused my G70 to drift a lot. I too use to touch mine up before watching a movie. Now it's very stable, although probably not as stable as some other makes and models. I probably have to touch mine up 3 to 4 times a year.
Curt could probably get a lot of repair business for unstable G70 DC boards, but he doesn't have much interest in G70s.

Wow, that was alot of comments. I mean I went home last night came in this morning and all these responses. I brought the CD of the Install and owner's manual with the setup program with me today and read it from cover to cover. I now know enough to be dangerous. I will work on it tomorrow morning for a few hours. I will have my laptop in the room so I can refer to the manual constantly. I have done this all once before; but it was when I first got the projector and have since forgotten everything. I think this will be fun.
For the most part I think I shouldn't have to start from scratch because it was already setup once. I might be posting tomorrow if I run into trouble.
You are all a great help. Thanks.

I didn't know NECs also had balance. I guess all the really good PJs have it!

I don't understand you guys always saying you have to tweek your projector often for a good pic. I have had my main projector mounted in 2 locations since I bought it about 9 years ago. Each time I installed it, spent the time adjusting it properly and then just enjoyed it. I would watch it almost every day for hours and its still going strong. Occasionally I would recheck the convergence but it was almost always right on. Very rarely off a little. Maybe I've just been lucky or maybe its the brand of projector. After all it's an AMPRO!!!!!!!
