I have an SD146A Tube that was hissing. The hissing would stop if I disconnected the HT lead so I changed the lead thinking it may be faulty. The set was switched on in a darkened room and there it was, high tension arcing down the side of the tube. It appeared to originate at the base of the tube bell where the face of the tube is attached.
Has anyone seen this before and does it mean the tube is toast. The face of the tube shows no wear.

It's possible that the HV boot that connects the HV lead to the tube could be faulty, allowing the HV to "leak" out and arc along the side of the tube. Here's a writeup about how to remove the boot and replace it (note that if the boot itself is faulty, you'll need a new HV lead/boot):
http://www.curtpalme.com/HV_Lead_Removal.shtm
DON'T run the set with that arcing going on though - it can damage things very quickly! If it's not the boot, then sorry to say, the tube is probably cracked somewhere.
Good luck!

What PJ is this tube in? Barco 1100's are famous for eating these tubes up.

Its a Barco 1100.
After closer inspection its clear that the arking was coming from the side of the tube where the bell meets the lens or face of the tube. I have applied silicon to this area in an attempt to insulate it. My silcon skills are really improving a few more tubes and I will be ready to perform breast implants.
