I am curious is this a 2/4 pole cpc? and if so i read somewhere that you could make it a six pole with magnets. I just don't remember where i saw it. thanks for the help

I read that too.
you have to use some small rare earth magnets and arrange them on the ring material and let them sit overnight.
some CPC rings are un-magnetized. I have a couple sets that have 2 pole and 4 pole and a third set that are not magnetized at all. Its only that third set that you can do that with unless you have a way to "erase" the 2 or 4 pole version.

do the rings need to be in a specific order 2/4/6 2/6/4 etc?

cool I will try and magnetize the center rings to be six pole Just for giggles i will make the 6 pole rings closest to the front of the tube.
Do you know which is which 2 / 4 they have white on the tabs and yellow.
I cant remember white is 2 pole and yellow is 4 pole ???
Does that sound correct?

lay one flat , put a piece of paper over it and shake some iron filings on the paper. it should show the magnetic pattern.

Cool. I'd like to see the iron filings. Take a picture for us.

sure no problem
Do you think it would be wise to redo the fields for all the rings?

Threadus resurrectus!
Any luck manually magnetizing the dead ring? I have a set I can pull from a 1208/2 that look just like that pictured, AND I have access to LOTS of ridiculously powerful rare earth magnets. (Not to mention several 800+ Joule magnetizing machines )

I have access to several very specialized magnetizing machines...
My company makes automotive sensors that use magnets and hall-effect (among other) sensors: The magnets we use are typically Neodymium-Iron-Boron ceramic, about 5/16" square and 3/16" thick, and are charged ten at a time (mainly because the LIQUID-COOLED coil takes two minutes to cool off enough for another shot!) Magnetizing ceramics requires a specialized field, created by a specially designed coil, so there really is no such thing as a generic magnetizer.
The CPC magnets will typically be a plastic that is highly loaded with ground ceramic magnetizable powder (such as NiB) and are actually magnetized IN the plastic mold when they are shot... While the plastic is molten a field is applied that concentrates the magnetic filler in the spots where the poles are to reside.
This is why I'm interested to know if anybody has been successful magnetizing a dead ring.
We've got one damn spiffy plastic magnetized-in-place ring that we use, which is actually shaped rather like a CPC ring, with 15 pole pairs. It's used as a rotary encoder with a hall quadrature counter on a motor-driven product we make.
This is contained within the production "SmartBar" (TM AA&M) sway-bar disconnect that American Axle provides to Jeep.
http://www.aam.com/index.php?s=48 (We are AA&M's tier-two on many products.)
Note that the picture on AA&M's website is of the Proof of Concept piece, which actually uses another actuator I helped create, but which looks NOTHING like the production SmartBar actuator.
--Edit: This site shows the best pic of the production unit that I could find. http://www.wawii.com/powerwagon/LegendaryDodgeRamPowerWagonReturns.htm
The smartbar actuator is the cast aluminum bit partially hidden behind the winch drum.
