Come on, AR - Fight Club is AWESOME! Being a Clockwork fan, I would think you'd find it pretty interesting, too.

It makes fun of so many things all at once... Consumerism, career, office politics, self-help/support groups, celebrity... all wrapped in a mind-bender. The monolog in that movie is some of my all-time favorite script writing. The opening scene when Ed Norton is in his apartment trying to order something from IKEA... yet another thing for his perfect apartment to try to make him happy... and the camera pans around the room like an IKEA catalog.... it's just a classic film. I was down in the theater a month or so ago and nobody was home. I turned on HBO or Showtime and it was on in HD. I watched from start to finish - couldn't stop watching it.

You know it seems a lot of you have been breaking the first two rules of fight club.

The book is a good read also.. Chuck is one heck of an interesting writer.

Maybe I'll build the "fight Club" theater.... Oh wait.. That is what I started with.. LMAO...

Let's be honest. There's no practical reason for a big DVD collection. It's simply for show. It's to impress your guests.

I disagree.
I like coming home and having the option of watching a movie. Or lending it to a friend, or having a friend see a movie in my collection and we'll watch a bit or the whole thing.

I like having an owned copy, not some rental that i have to order and then wait for. Or stream from the net

I like the big collection, if it is good enough to watch a couple of times it is usually good enough to buy. A lot of the foreign and classic (or alternative...) titles I like are not easy to find so it is worth owning a copy.I do not need to have these instantly available on hard drive, and a dvd jukebox can "hide" a lot of movies if the clutter bothers you.

We spend thousands on our projectors. The double their cost modding them. Gobs of money on the rest of the theater, for what? So we can whine over spending $15.00 for a DVD. I haven't rented a movie in years. If I even think I'm interested in it, I buy it. My DVD collection is at about the 350 point Laughing

On-line renting has a huge selection. It's very rare (maybe once a year) they don't have a movie I want to see, and I watch a lot of obscure movies.

The clutter doesn't bother me. I just don't see any point in having DVDs I'll never watch.

I probably owned more than that before I started ripping, but never more than maybe 150 at a time. I'd get to a certain point where I'd start looking over my collection and asking myself, "How many of these movies will I actually watch again?" Because I had already watched most of them as many times as I cared to, the answer was, "Not many." So I'd sell my entire collection. Next thing I know, I look on my DVD shelf, and it's full again. So again I'd sell them. I did this at least 3 or 4 times. I was buying all my DVDs in pawn shops (surprisingly, getting a lot of current releases) and getting them cheap enough that I would make money or break even when I sold them.

Like I mentioned, I bought a hard drive case with intentions of amassing a large collection. It was later that I realized it's biggest value for me was time shifting, and that I didn't have any need or desire for a large collection. It took many years of getting rid of collections for that to finally sink in.

I'm cheap, so I'm ecstatic that I can watch movies for a little over a dollar each. If I really, really like it, I can save it and watch how ever many extra times I want--for free.

I understand that we do spend a lot on our HTs, and that DVD expense doesn't matter to most of you. But that's really not my point. Some of you may get good use out of your DVD collections, but I bet most of you don't. If you put a sticker on a DVD cover when you bought it, and noted each time you watched it, I bet you'd find that the vast majority of your DVDs only get watched once. For those with huge collections, probably a large portion never get watched at all.

Like I said, that's fine if that's what you want to do. It's just not for me. To me it doesn't make any sense.

It's a no brainer for me, I pick up DVD's at yard sales for a couple of bucks. If it looks interesting I grab it, throw it in my collection and watch it when I feel like it. Most of the stuff I find is usually the bigger hit movies. The most recent ones I have gotten are.

"U2 go home", for freeeeeee. I would have easily paid full price for this one, as I collect concert DVD's.

"Hollow Man", have not seen this movie yet, $3.00.

"Bring It On" Seen it, pretty good movie, cheap at $3.00, would not mind seeing these hot girls again Very Happy

Deron.

Well I can guaranty you won't watch Hollow Man more than once (unless you like really bad movies). You paid $3 for the privilege to watch it. I paid less than $1 to watch it (on-line renting use to be cheaper). You have the DVD and I don't, but I wouldn't take that DVD if someone gave it to me for free. So from my cheapskate point of view, even though you got a good deal on the DVD, I came out way better than you by renting.

PS: Not all, but some pawnshops sell DVDs 3 for $10, sometimes even 4 for $10. This can include newer releases. Something some of you fellow cheapskates might want to check into.

Hollow Man... Wouldn't pay $1 for it. The pack rat in me would take it for free, but I don't think it would ever get watched.

I'll have to check out the pawn shops - thanks for the suggestion. I'd like to have some more concert DVDs and those things are never on sale. So many of them are 4:3, though...

I saw a guy on Craigslist selling a collection of at LEAST 100 DVDs (I just did a quick count) locally for $300/offer. Judging by the titles, I'd say the 'woman of the house' had made a lot of the DVD purchases and she was 'not on site' any more - if you know what I mean. Hell of a deal if you ask me. There were quite a few dupes of movies the wife and I already had, or I would have been tempted to offer the guy $200 for the lot. That's a LOT of entertainment for that kind of money. $200... 100 DVD's or 8-10 HD DVD/BD movies. Hmmm...

I used to be the same way. I would amass a large collection, then months down the road I would look and see that 90% of them never got watched again. I sold the entire collection and now rely on Netflix for the majority of my movies. I do however still buy the movies I consider truly worth having. There are some movies I can watch over and over again. Titles like Anchorman, 300, LotR, Transformers etc. I also know people that rip DVDs and either burn them or store them. I must say that I cannot approve of that. In my book that is straight piracy and thievery. If you are burning back up copies of movies you own, then that is 100% ok in my book. However renting them and ripping them is quite illegal and should not be condoned. Gotta set a good example for the kids.

I know that most of us here are simply backing up 'owned' copies - a HTPC can be a great way to centralise everything Smile

I once had all my CDs and DVDs stolen (over 1000 at the time) - but I had everything backed up. Because I'd already paid for them, I have no problems keeping what I have stored.

Wow that is a really good case for the companies who try to argue the legality of even backing up copies of movies, music, and games that you have purchased. That's a lot of money that you would have lost. Scratches are the main reason I would do it. Like I said though I find that practice 100% ok.

I honestly wonder what would happen if the FACT (australian copyright people) came to the door

I download a lot of movies and tv series-es, but the moment they come out locally, I buy them. Combined with the fact that I have all my credit card statements with the purchases on them... they would have a hard time getting a conviction.

There are some legitimate 'rippers' out there - there definately should be provision for us.

Oliver, getting a lot of media stolen would suck. That's why I have most of my media collection in my household inventory - so that if I lost all due to theft or disaster, I'd be reimbursed for it. Obviously, that wouldn't replace difficult- or impossible-to-find titles.

Could you not collect on any sort of homeowners' insurance for the theft of the DVDs? No insurance?

SC - for the very reason you mentioned Sad Most (30-40%) were very difficult to replace. I was a DJ for many years, a lot of titles were white labels/promotional (given to me by record/media companies). The dollar value given to me didn't even cover 10% of the actual value. I'd paid cash for a lot of the other titles and had no record other than the contents on my hard drives. I learnt a very important lesson - pay for everything with credit card so you have a record of your records Wink

Sorry about that Oliver! That sucks! Sad

My house was broken into once. I came home and the front door was wide open with a giant basketball shoe print on it. Seriously, it was HUGE! I was afraid to go in the house, because I feared whoever owned that shoe might still be inside. Shocked The burglars didn't get much though. My ex-wife had just moved out and she had already taken almost everything! Mr. Green

They did manage to get my Levi's, of all things. Shocked

I rent and rip, and I have no qualms about what I do. I use my rips to "TiVo" my rentals. Instead of saying "Gee, I'd like to watch a movie, guess I have to go out to the rental place and pick something...nahh, not worth the bother," I just fire up one of my rips. I rent them, rip them, and keep them on hand until I have a chance to watch them. I generally have about 4-5 movies ready to go. When I've watched a movie, I delete it. I see nothing wrong with this. If you rent, rip, and KEEP your ripped copies, that's different.

That Voodoo Levis commercial is *fabulous*!! Very artsy/artistically done, and a hilarious punchline!
