You guys are all missing the point here.

Many people here are saying that it's no big deal that a lot of smaller companies are dropping HD-DVD because, well, they're "small". It really doesn't matter if a company is a "small" software company that grosses $200K/year or a "large" $5 billion/year movie studio. Big or small, they're all using the same judgement on where things are going to pick whether to support HD-DVD or not. THAT'S the important thing, and in the last 2 months many have announced that they're dropping HD-DVD while none are announcing that they're dropping Blu-ray.

Everyone else will follow suite. Big or small, doesn't matter. Money drives this whole industry and big or small everyone wants to make money. Doesn't matter if you hope to make $10 profit or $10 billion profit, the judgement is all the same. They will all make same choice as they want to make money. That choice is Blu-ray. The TREND is what is telling, not the size of company making the choice.

Doesn't matter, Gary. Toshiba media sales are not there even when they've lowered the hardware prices for the lowest common denominator. Yet, their competition has expensive players and people buying more than one player and dominating sales of the media. If Toshiba itself doesn't feel their platform worth enough to maintain an even disposition then why should the public's perception?

One thing that's really surprised me is how profound the effect of FUD in forums and blogs has been in this format war. I can't believe how many rumors, mischaracterizations, and outright lies I've read about the players and moves in this war. The stuff would spread like wildfire - as in less than a day - and then get repeated over and over and over for weeks in forums before it cold be refuted.

The tactics of Blue Ray consisted in opening, at a given signal, a veritable drum-fire of lies and calumnies against the man whom they believed to be the most redoubtable of their adversaries, until the nerves of the latter gave way

Kal said that it didn't mater big or small why a company was going to blue ray... At the end of the day they are all going that way.

The Blue Ray Machine knows how to create the impression that they alone are the protectors of the highest picture quality. In this way, acting very circumspectly but never losing sight of their ultimate goal, they conquer one position after another,

These tactics are based on an accurate estimation of human frailties and must lead to success, with almost mathematical certainty, unless the other side also learns how to fight poison gas with poison gas.

It is my understanding that the HDDVD is cheaper to produce... and cheaper to build hardware for. Which means to me that if all other things are equal the HD would be a more profitable format. The difference here is purely a marketing game. so the "money" aspect of the entire debate is skewed....

and until some companies realize that that are facing "poison gas" and learn how to use it.. well...

*Best Buy to Recommend Blu-ray as the Customer's Digital Format Choice*

Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is taking a step forward in addressing consumer confusion about high-definition formats. Beginning in early March, the leading consumer electronics retailer will prominently showcase Blu-ray hardware and software products in its Best Buy retail and online channels in the United States.

"Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We've listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format," said Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer. "Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them."

Dunn continued, "Best Buy has always believed that the customer will benefit from a widely-accepted single format that would offer advantages such as product compatibility and expanded content choices. Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products."

"With the explosion of HDTVs, customers are hungry for quality, high definition content. We believe our move to feature Blu-ray should help consumers feel confident in their hi-def content choices," said Mike Vitelli, Best Buy's senior vice president, Home Solutions. "Best Buy is excited by the next generation of digital products and we know our customers are too. We are excited about helping customers find the right mix of products and services to make the next generation of high definition entertainment technology come alive for them. We believe that Blu-ray is the right solution for consumers."

Best Buy currently carries a wide array of Blu-ray hardware and software products. The company noted that it will continue to carry an assortment of HD-DVD products for customers who desire to purchase these products.

That's in 3 weeks!

So that means that the number of Universal or Paramount HD-DVD movies sold starting early March will drop even lower. Amazon already has warnings on all their Warner HD-DVD pages that Warner's dropping the format.

Staying HD-DVD exclusive will be very wrong move for the bean counters at Paramount and Universal. I thought they'd last 4-6 more months but I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement now within the next 2-4 weeks from both studios saying that they're going 100% Blu-ray and dropping HD-DVD completely.

Hell, they've ALREADY been doing it. Best Buy's been shoving HD-DVD into the back corner for months. This just makes it official.

They sure have, the dishonest *******. I was in there in November, and they'd completely stacked the deck in how they were displaying the HDM. They had the BD movies all faced out to take up two 'bays' in the display racks. The HD DVD's were stacked and turned so that a bunch of the spines were facing out, and not as many covers facing out. They were taking up one bay. To the casual observer, I'm sure it like there were exactly twice as many BD titles available. Gee, I wonder why BD sold twice as much in Best Buy stores?

Riiigghhtttt.... I know Best Buy is what I think of when I need guidance in consumer electronics. Please. Who writes that sh*t?

Just got this from netflix in my mail.

We're Going Blu-ray!

Dear Derfla,

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

You can click here to change your format preferences.

We're sorry for any inconvenience. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call us at 1 (888) 638-3549.

Retail stores are liars, and they've already sold their grandmothers to the devil for a dime profit.

Like it or not, what I just read at "the Digital Bits" tells me that HD-DVD is now DONE..."Japanese Broadcaster NHK is reporting that Toshiba will announce they are pulling the plug on HD-DVD next week". They are also saying that Reuters is also running with this story.
I for one am glad it's over, now the masses can embrace one format, prices WILL drop, and our HD disc format should now take off as it should have two years ago.

Good luck with that. Personally, I don't see why prices will go down on anything but hardware. If sales are decent, I don't see where the studios will have any incentive whatsoever to drop title pricing.
