They are having a fire sale. They are gonna sell whats on the shelves and in the pipeline. Commitment to new production. Thats what we're looking for.

John, I hate to break it to you but $80 isn't a fire sale price for that drive. I remember buying a Nintendo Virtual Boy from Walmart for $20 brand new when that game system was tanking. That system's MSRP was $180.00. 89% off MSRP is a fire sale price. A temporary 56% off price (or 38% off price if you consider that it's currently priced at $130) isn't a fire sale. So tell me again why Blu-ray can give players away for free with HDTVs but the HD DVD camp cannot slash prices to try and stay competitive?
Actually, those Xbox 360 drives could help HD DVD a lot if that $80 price was locked in and included 6 promo titles. There are 17.7 million Xbox 360 systems worldwide. I have to imagine that most of those 17.7 million Xbox 360 owners don't also own a PS3 or Blu-ray standalone player. They might be thinking of buying a PS3 down the road when Sony gets more games out for it. Then again, going from the Xbox 360 to the PS3 is still a pretty lateral move as far as game systems go. The PS3 isn't a whole generation ahead of the Xbox 360.

The hd-dvd consortium is trying to hang on. They hope to use the increased sales numbers to convince the remaining studios to stay with them.
As i said, commitment to new product, new models is what will speak to the longer term for hd-dvd.
Microsoft is committed because of their battle w/ sony. Other than that the other players are hedging til they get an offer.

The lack of commitment to new product isn't in hardware with HD DVD. The lack of commitment has to do with software and the studios. If I were Toshiba I'd be more concerned with getting 3rd generation players and HD DVD ROM and writer drives selling than investing in 4th generation standalone players.
Speaking of commitment to new product, where are the Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players? Where's the Matrix Trilogy? Where's LOTR? We know the problem with Star Wars -- George Lucas is a moron.

If i were running toshiba, and someone brought me a proposal for the next gen player, id fire him. With only2 studios supporting the format, you cant commit that kind of money to develop and produce a new player.

If Microsoft wanted to stick it to Sony they'd REALLY drop the price of that HD DVD add-on drive. I mean come on! It's a drive and maybe a little extra hardware! On the otherhand you have standalone players which are basically stripped down computers!
Gotta love that above article too. They are claiming that Microsoft is slashing the price of the add-on by 50%. That drive was already reduced to $180 last summer. I guess 50% price slash sounds more newsworthy than 28% price slash.
In other news, Intel is slashing the price of its Core 2 Duo processors by almost 50% since their launch in 2006!

The drops aren't sustainable. Its great for turnover but not for nett margin.
Artificial boosts in sales figures for players hasn't increased software sales as much as Toshiba hoped. (They are "disappointed" .. again!)

Actually, I think the Outfit, err, Sony is frusterated that HD DVD isn't dead yet. HD DVD is Porter, Warner is Val Resnick, and Sony is the Outfit. Oh, and I think Microsoft is Stegman. Whether the format war will go theatrical or straight up, we'll see in 6 months. Not dead yet.

Trying to do my part to keep it alive. Just bought Elizabeth (The Golden Age) it is the first HD-DVD's I bought in a couple of months though. BR as gotten much more of my $$$ lately.

It was mentioned over at AVS and then dismissed as a typical lawsuit against a CE MFR. If it was the other way around, emdawgz would have rung the bell and said that HD DVD was done for!

I see this as nothing fantastic. It would be like me filing a suit and seeking class action for my Toshiba HD-A2 locking up occasionally when I pop a disk into the unit. This Toshiba product is far from being refined. Its great when it works. Unfortunately, the operating effectiveness is far from being 100%.
