We're just not connecting, here. I'm not saying HD isn't going to take off or even that isn't going to take off in a big way. I just don't think it's going to happen as fast as I think you do. No 'exponential explosive' growth is what I'm saying. I never said sales would stagnate - I just think they're going to steadily increase, and DVD sales will steadily decline. I don't know where you get that my logic says we should all still be listening to 78's?!!? Basically, all I've said is that this whole transition isn't going to happen as fast as you think, and somehow you're getting that I think HD isn't going to take off and sales will stagnate!?!!

I don't think the difference between HD/BD and DVD is small - as a matter of fact, I think it's HUGE. I can hardly stand to watch DVD anymore; I'm a frickin' HD SNOB. It pisses my wife off because I hardly want to watch anything that isn't HD anymore (and let's face it - the selection of HD SUCKS compared to DVD, still.) No, I'm saying that average Joe - Joe Six Pack - with his sh*tty 720p digital, junk flat panel, laptop, etc. - the masses - millions of people - THOSE people won't/don't see that much difference. To be honest, on a 42" 720/768p LCD - there really ISN'T that much difference! That's my point. How do the stores sell these formats? On a 42" LCD. Yeah, I know - it looks great on a 1080p display...

I know sales of HDM skyrocketed. That's because it was pathetically small. You can consider practically any increase at all 'skyrocketing'.

Look, more than any other factor, I think the price of the media has to come down closer to DVD (J6P just isn't into paying $30 for a movie at Best Buy when the DVD's are on sale for $17.99 right next to it. The players have to get down to $150. One format, lower player prices, and lower media prices together will cause the critical mass effect for HDM.

I just think it's just going to be a steady decline for DVD and a steady increase for HD. But, you're right - we'll see.

What choice would it be?

HD-DVD?

I don't think so

course they would if they were die-hard?!?! Rolling Eyes

i still think the fat lady hasn't even stepped on stage yet, but certainly sounds like lots are waiting in the stadium

Gino, even a die hard - put their house on the line - make them bet one way or another with those sort of stakes...

You would have to be absolutely puffin muffins to bet on HD-DVD

Are there any HD-DVD supporters here that really would bet their house on HD-DVD winning the "war" now? Really? Truly?

I wouldn't bet my house either, but I also wouldn't bet my reputation by so staunchly proclaiming the death or victory of either format.

Sure I am cheering for HD DVD, who wouldn't? Laughing I only want them to "win" because I see this as the only way I will be able to watch all movies on my existing equipment in HD. Not likely for other studios to release in HDDVD at this point. [I hope this changes soon though]

But I am not going to continually harp about how stupid BR is and how everyone would be happier if HD DVD "won" already so I could buy star wars on HD.

It really surprises me at how many comments continually put down a region free, low cost, HDM alternative.

Huh? do you mean digital, which does not mean high definition? I have to clear up my parents of this mistake all the time! Laughing

Not only is not not necessarily HD, but the digital carrier or subcarrier channel can easily carry crappy analog rebroadcast with really appalling black levels. Heck, my local PBS station does this all the time. SD analog rebroadcast on the digital channel.

I was at one of my local Walmarts tonight. They had a promo for BlueRay playing on all the screens in the whole department. The Blue ray player was hooked up to a screen showing the difference between DVD and Blueray with half screens of the same shot on the screen at once. Down the isle a few feet was a HD-DVD player just setting there with the price under it. That is what is going to make Blueray win. The constant bombardment of demos of Blueray while they are looking at all the flat screens. I was there for about 20 minutes and all they showed was how great Blueray was. Same feed on all screens.

You don't go to stores very often then because there are probably an equal number of stories with HDDVD playing on the screens.

Regardless of which "side" you are on...everyone should go here and play with their taser, if you know what I mean...

Unless that thing vibrates then my wife ain't gonna let a second HD DVD player in the household. BTW, it really makes little difference when it comes to the in-store demonstrations. Pretty much contrived. One should also just conduct an HD vs SD for movies within their own home on their own display considering we live in an age of 30-day return policies.

Walking through Target yesterday and catching a glimpse at the Booray end cap with its marketing info playing reminded me of what I have seen in war movies about spreading propaganda. Pretty humorous and a little scary. Booray is the superior race!

Wow, sounds like the HD DVD Superbowl ad didn't even air in most locations. Sounds like they only ran it in major markets. What's worse, sounds like it ran in standard definition. Pretty pathetic.

I watched the whole game and I didn't see it. There were some local commercials inserted so maybe those bumped the HD-DVD ad?

I saw the commercial online. It wasn't that bad of a commercial. Though if it's true that it wasn't displayed in HD, as it seems many, if not all, local commercials are, then that's quite lame. You want to knock the socks off HDTV owners with a HD commercial!

It must have just been a local commercial in large markets. I heard it ran in LA. I cannot imagine it having that big of an impact now. Perhaps they couldn't afford a national commercial or felt that such a large expense for a national commercial would rob too much from efforts to advertise in print, radio, and lower profile TV programs. To bad as I'm sure the Superbowl's ratings were spectacular as it was a historic game!

Ah well. If HD DVD does die then I hope Blu-ray comes down in price and goes mainstream. I'm sick of this crap for content. HD DVD may only have 25% of studios after May, but the planned releases are still pathetic for both sides. I suppose that's what DVD was like when it was trying to take down VHS. If there were Blu-ray players at the price, quality, and upgradeability of HD DVD players then I'd probably be purple. Though I'm reminded of the fact that I have 17 HD DVD titles and some of them I've not even watched and only a few I've watched twice. Guess I should have rented from the beginning!

I didn't see it. I am surprised at some of the commercials that did pay to get on.

Well, this thread is about supporting HD DVD and saving it from oblivion. I figured if I post that 'special' I could force those pro-HD DVD supporters to go buy another player and support their religion. Very Happy

I can't see anything special about the special you posted, though. I'd buy one for $80, but I can't see anywhere where its anything but $155 new or $99 used. Couldn't when you posted it, either.

The stock must have gone fast because I went and looked later that morning that WanMan posted, and I didn't see the deal then, either.

Huh. Weird. Why would anyone buy into a dying format? (That's sarcasm in case anyone was wondering.)
