It's that time again. Lets talk Demo material. With the release of HD material and such what would you use as demo material if you were creating a disc?

Lets say 10 clips, 5 min or less, hd or non hd material. That shows great picture and sound.

What will you use??? 8)

I recently recorded Transformers in HD onto my Dish DVR. I haven't had the chance to watch it all but the scenes I have checked out are pretty cool. Big sound, big visuals. Pretty sure that one will be a keeper for demo material for me.

I've authored 24 .ts HD clips onto DVD-R in HD DVD format using Ulead MovieFactory. Works great.

Like the HD demo discs I made for Cliff's and William's HT meets:

I chose movies that Cliff said he liked, and since his last meet had a "gun" theme, I chose several scenes with firearms...

Eventually I want to investigate how to crop clips out of Blu-Ray instead of using the reduced bandwidth compression from my cable DVR.

At home, I have a directory full of short HD clips and another directory of HD music videos that I use for demos... streamed via XP Media Center to my XBox360.

I think you're looking for discussion for demo content rather than method, so here are some other demo discs that show some of the HD clips I've used:

Clarence, I still have not tried that with Ulead. I checked the thread on it and it was just way over my head. The last successful authoring I did was with standard DVD's and DVD Shrink. I really need to figure this out.

I need to make a new one with some of my newer HD movies.

I'll try to compile links to all of the software components required and post screenshots of a simplified workflow.

Last week I tried to follow the similar process for creating a homebrew blu-ray demo disc, but I needed upgrades for all of the software I have... I have MF5+ for HDDVD, I need MF6+ for Blu-Ray ($69), plus the HD pack ($20). I have Nero 7, I need Nero 8 (with UDF 2.5). I didn't feel like spending $150 in software upgrades just to make a demo disc.

Workflow for Successful MPEG2 BDMVs on DVD Media

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woo-hoo! Got it to work using a slight modification to Tom's method. Tried 4 different TS files that previously resulted in stutters w/o audio on the PS3. Now they all play perfectly. Tried DVD+RW, DVD+R SL and a DVD-R DL.

Here's my workflow, which is very similar to Tom's.

1. Take your hi-def capture and run it through VideoRedo (VRD). MPEG2VCR also works according to MozartMan, but I find VRD better. Cut out segments you don't want. Click 'Save As...' and choose 'Transport Stream (*.ts)' for output. Before this, if you haven't done so just once before, after you open VRD, click 'Tools', then while holding down the 'Shift' key, choose 'Options'. This gives you extra setup options. Find the line 'Add GOP Timecode to all GOPs' and enable it to 'True'.

2. Run your VRD-generated TS through Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6+ with their HD Power Pack plug-in. It costs $20, but Google "ulead coupon" and you might find a 10% off coupon as I did. Start the Ulead launcher w/o any disc in your drive. Click 'New Video Project' button, then click 'OK' to choose your drive, then choose 'Blu-ray' with 'BDMV' option and click 'OK'. Once you're in, disable menu option and don't add any chapters.

3. Run your Ulead-generated M2TS file (in the BDMV/STREAM folder) through TSRemux v0.0.18 with the 'Blu-Ray' output option to another folder on your hard drive. Set chapter markers to however many minutes you want.

4. Delete 0001.m2ts from the TSRemux-generated BDMV/STREAM folder and copy over 0000.m2ts from the Ulead-generated BDMV/STREAM folder. Rename 0000.m2ts to 0001.m2ts.

5. Burn the TSRemux 'BDMV' and 'CERTIFICATE' folders to any DVD media with Nero 7 or 8. Make sure you choose 'DVD-ROM (UDF)', then under the 'UDF' tab, choose 'Manual settings' and 'Physical partition' with 'UDF 2.50'.

6. Perfect playback w/DD 2.0 or 5.1 audio on the PS3 with chapters and smooth forward/reverse scan. No menus, but I don't need them.

Yeah, you are the master of flowcharts and diagrams Clarence! That would be awesome for the simpleminded such as myself who require pictures to grasp a concept! Embarassed

Yeah, I wish the Time Warner Cable market here would activate the Firewire ports on our DVR's so I could start archiving some stuff. They are really slow to roll things out here for some reason.

I am pretty sure that the new Ulead Video Studio 11+ with the free download bonus pack adds authoring HD DVD to DVD in one step.

Just load up your HD clips, click on burn to disc, select HD DVD on DVD and click burn. It has worked only once for me but I have only tried it once.

I didn't realize that the BD spec included standard DVD's. I thought this was an advantage HD DVD had over BD. Nice to know. Thumbs Up

All you need to make a 3x DVD (HD DVD on DVD):

Ulead Movie Factory 6 Plus -- http://www.ulead.com/dmf/trial.htm (trial lasts 30 days)

VideoReDoPlus -- http://www.videoredo.com/en/Download.htm#DownloadPlus (trial lasts 15 days)

.ts files or other HD content (.ts files can be converted to .mpg files using VideoReDoPlus and "smart rendered" in Ulead Movie Factory 6 Plus, meaning they aren't re-rendered, so the process is pretty fast). Some people have .ts files available for download on the Internet, such as at http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/HDTV/ . I made a compilation 3x DVD of all the funny Superbowl commercials from last year and I'm eager to make another 3x DVD with this coming Superbowl commercials, in tasty HD that is!

DVD writer

I've also been playing with other sources. I downloaded all the episodes of mariposaHD and have been putting those on 3x DVD. The show is basically exotic locations and scantily dressed beautiful women in HD. Very nice! The problem is that on some of the clips there seems to be frame issues. The playback is jerky on some parts. I think it might have to do with the content being deinterlaced and/or Ulead confused about the frames, though I'm not totally sure. Some parts look fine though -- very fine if you know what I mean! If you don't know what I mean then may I suggest downloading episode 2 and watching the first segment titled Karo...

Again, I don't think you need to go the MF6 and VideoRedo confusing route. If you have read that thread it is amazing people still want to try this! Shocked

Getting the full featured Video Studio 11+ works. About $90 after rebate and $20 for a DVD burner.

I'll have to check out the trial for Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus. In skimming the thread, which was HUGE, I guess I mistakenly thought all references to "Studio 11" were "Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate", which I heard was very crappy software.

The Ulead Movie Factory 6 Plus and VideoReDo Plus route isn't half bad though. I don't know how well Ulead Video Studio 11 can edit and splice .ts files. Can it cut and splice .ts files without re-encoding them? That's the cool thing about VideoReDo Plus. You can cut out all the junk and output the .ts file, archive it or possible future use, perhaps for another format, and then work on authoring a disc. VideoReDo Plus also is very stable. I don't think I've seen it crash once yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Blu-ray on DVD (BD9, correct?) wasn't an official spec of Blu-ray or at least wasn't supported by all Blu-ray standalone players. I heard that the PS3 is good about playing much of what's thrown at it, though if I'm making a disc I want it to play on ALL players. I also read somewhere that AVCHD on DVD may not be supported by all Blu-ray players and that the player has to explicitly mention that it can play AVCHD, sort of like a DVD player stating that it can play MP3 or DivX. I also heard that AVCHD on DVD also cannot have navigation capabilities either. It's just video on a disc, not unlike MP3s on a CD for DVD players that support that, correct? If all that's true then 3x DVD is the better HD on DVD format, though it's not going to be too relevent if HD DVD dies.

It would be cool if Toshiba could make a HD DVD player/recorder that could record HD to both HD DVDs and DVDs. Maybe cache the .ts files to an internal hard drive and have basic cut and splice editing capabilities, after which you could burn to HD DVD or DVD. Yeah, I know that's a pipe dream considering Blu-ray is beating HD DVD like a bad stepchild right now. Ah well, at least it can be done on a PC, which is the better way to go about it anyway.

Weeeell that might not be demo material. Y'know family and friends over the house. You wanna show what your system can really do.

John Holmes on a 110 inch screen is not what most of us had in mind Shocked

Is there a way to rip clips from BD movies or HD-DVD movies (with a PC drive), then burn in a HD format using either BD/HD-DVD burner?
