The green tube was hissing quite loudly so I changed the HT lead and this has reduced the noise but it still hisses. Should I be concerned?

Has it started hissing recently, or not?
Unfortunately these tubes have a tendency to fail prematurely, that's why not many of them are around anymore. Long time ago my green tube went out and it hissed loudly because the gun was arcing. Was nice to watch, a kind of green/pink light emitted from the gun.

The lightoutput however from the SD146 tubes is fantastic, the image is very punchy. These are some of the brightest CRT-projectors around.

Also the cooling and airflow in the 1100 is not the best design I've seen. Has it the 'open chassis' where the warmed up air is blown towards the tubes? Reversing the airflow and better controlling it would be an improvement to this chassis in my opninion. Later models (BG808 and BG1200 and up) have reversed the airflow and improved the cooling of the convergence tray. Don't know if that will increase the tube life, but it might be worth trying.

Hissing is always(?) an indication of HV arcing/leakage, and can't be considered 'good'.

Does it go away when you disconnect the HV lead at the splitter for the green tube?

I purchased the tube from another forum member and it has always hissed.
As I recall when you disconnect the red HT lead from the splitter the hissing stops. That was the reason that I changed the HT lead and when I did this the hissing reduced considerably but is still there.

When you replaced the HT lead did you use silicone sealant under the suction cup like end?

Before applying the silicone sealant you need to clean the glass propperly to remove all oil, dust and other contaminants.

I did use silicon and I did remove as much of the old stuff as I could. Its possible some small amount of the old silicon did remain.
