|
|
My VP-30 gave me an unexpected problem yesterday.
Starting from rest, the VP-30 will not “boot up”. I get an initial display reading “DVDO iScan VP-30”, then “powered by ABT”, then a brief flash of the red LED, then the display goes dark for about half a second, then the process starts again, and repeats until the power is removed. My projector indicates it is not receiving a signal from the VP-30 during this time.
I disconnected it yesterday because I was installing some cooling fans in the rack and other than having to disconnect it and get it out of the way so I could put the fans in and then re-connecting everything, nothing has changed.
If anyone here has seen this before, and know what it is, will you please provide some direction? Is this something I can reset myself and if so, how?
Thanks....
Chuck

I've had one here where the power supply went bad. It's $25 from DVDO. THe one here was completely dead, but if it's on the gerge of failing, then I guess it could partialy power up, then die.

In that case, I'll put my voltmeter on the power plug when I get home today and see what is there.
Thanks, Curt!

Sorry for the delayed reply and for stating perhaps the obvious, but did you already try the hard reset?
Have you tried doing a hard reset on the unit? This is done by:
1. Unplug the power from the back of the unit
2. Using your free hand, press and hold the Menu and Exit buttons while the unit is unplugged
3. Hold these buttons down as you plug the power back into the unit
4. Release the buttons after about 2-3 seconds after plugging the power into the unit
I had some wierd issues with my VP30 that this resolved...

Well, I did try that, but not because I knew it was how to do a hard reset. I knew that some combination of buttons would do the reset so I eventually found the combination but that wasn't the problem.
I dropped an e-mail to DVDO and they literally amazed me with their response. First, they got back to me right away (are you listening, Air Canada?), one of their techs diagnosed it as a failed power supply (after Curt had already done so!) and they sent me a new one.
The amazing part was that they did not ask for my sales receipt, they did not sent me back to the dealer, they didn't ask if it was still under warranty, all they asked for was my address. 3 days later, a new power supply arrived AT MY HOUSE (I live in the country and normally have to go to town to collect parcels), no charge for the parts, no charge for the delivery, no GST, no PST, no Canada Customs duty or entry charges, nothing. Just a new power supply, professionally packaged. And their and Curt's diagnosis was spot-on, I plugged in the new PS and everything works as it did before. I'm actually glad the hard reset didn't work because all my setting were saved in the process.
DVDO has demonstrated just what customer service is all about, in my view.

I'm wondering if they've had problems with the PSs. I cracked open the one I had, and the main filter caps had bubbled open at the tops, meaning either cheap caps or a voltage rating that's a touch low.
Break yours open and see if it's doing the same thing.

Ironically, I seem to be having trouble with my VP30 now, and I'm betting it's the power supply. When it's not plugged into the VP30, I can read 6.13 volts out of it. I noticed that when I plug it into the unit, the green LED on the PS dims, so I popped the cover off and measured the voltage with it plugged in and it reads 3.94 volts. The VP30 does not function at all, but when I plug or unplug the power supply, the orange LED and the blue LCD screen flicker very briefly.

The two caps close to the output cord have not broken open, but the tops are swelling as though there was some additional pressure in there at one point. It looks like the top of a pan of Jiffy Pop just before it gets torn open... I have sent an e-mail to DVDO, but I've already received two out-of-office replys, such that perhaps I won't get quite as quick a response as others just due to vacation schedules. If I don't hear anything back soon, perhaps I will try to replace those two capacitors and see what happens...

Sounding awfully familiar. I'm wondering if DVDO authorized resellers have the info on the fix and a few spare power supplies lying around?
Mine is still going strong, btw.

I was wondering that as well yesterday, but I couldn't find any authorized resellers in my area. The DVDO website seems to only list warehousers/distributors. I don't know how to find out where any end-user dealers might be, and I am very anxious to get this up and working again before the coming weekend...
Glad to hear yours is still working, because I was wondering if they fixed it or how long it would be before the new one failed again.

The PSU issue seems to be a common point of failure on these units. A handful of people on the other site reported this issue.

It's not worth finding/getting the caps, just get a new supply. Buy a spare right from DVDO.

Curt, aren't you an authorized DVDO dealer? My memory may be fading in my old age but I thought I remembered you saying that a while back.

Is this true Curt? DVDO says it is a dead power supply, but because I'm past the one year warranty point, they're going to charge me $49 plus shipping. You said earlier in this post it was $25, which is significantly easier to swallow...

I am, but both the DVDO and Lumagen Canadian distributors aren't keeping up with the dropping USD, so my Canadian dealer cost is more than US retail. I told both of them to go kiss off, and I only deal with them as required.
Last time I ordered the power supply from DVDO in Dec. 2007, it was $25.00 plus about $8.00 shipping (directly from DVDO, not the CDN distributor). I'll call them later today to find out. Maybe costs went up due to the dropping USD?

Are they shipping an updated power supply, or the same (problematic) one?

When I asked DVDO essentially the same question, this is the response I got:
--- Aaron Smith <aaron@anchorbaytech.com> wrote:
> Yes the new power supply is different and is spec'ed to last 50,000 hours.
Ken in the sales office heard that I had been using the unit for less than one year, and when I sent him something that said that in writing, he shipped me a replacement unit at (almost) no charge. I paid $22 to have it shipped 2nd Day air so that I could have it for the weekend. I have company coming and need this to work. I say this with a little bit of reservation until the supply actually arrives tomorrow and solves the problem, but I concur with Chuck that DVDO is essentially acknowledging they had a problem, and they've taken the appropriate actions to resolve the problem by changing the design and getting the new designed parts into the field. The only thing else they could do is go door to door and replace them before they fail. Considering many consumers don't ever fill out the warranty card, that would be very difficult for them to do...

The new power supply arrived yesterday and it is clearly different from the old one. It's more than twice as big, and instead of a 2 pin plug, It has a three pin fully grounded plug, and visibly heavier gauge wire. I haven't pulled the covers off and I don't intend to as long as it continues to work, but I'm definitely willing to bet what's inside is significantly different as well...
