Wow, he can't honestly believe that some air coming out of registers at a whopping 10-15 degrees warmer or colder than the ambient temp in the room is going to result in any visible artifact of any kind... can he?
Actually, I wonder if he's confused about where that effect can happen. It CAN happen near the lens - and the focal plane of the film/imager. Our crappy Infocus portable DLP blows hot air (think hair dryer temp) out the front right into the optical path. The result is an obvious "swirling" in the image, especially noticeable if you walk right up to the screen. However, we're talking about low-velocity swirling air that's must be AT LEAST 150-degrees - what, 80 degrees over ambient office temp?
I think the chances of seeing any visible artifact whatsoever as a result of the mildly heated or cooled air from an HVAC system is slim to none.

Sometimes my ex-wife would lie down mostly naked in front of the screen and the heat from her body would cause distortions in the image.
I explained how she was ruining my PQ. Women!

I have seen thermal distortion in Infocus LP130 presentation dlp projector, that had cooling air exhaust next to lens.

I have decided that I need to wear some thermal gear so that my body heat wont affect my picture and as for having friends round!....................

Well last weekend I have been to a Cinema and this heat distortion was a bit of an issue.
In still frames you could see the hot air moving from the bottom of the picutre to the upper part.
I think this was hot air that was moving directly in front of the film because it was sharp and the air waves were around a foot long.
But with my CRT I have never noticed this problem (LC)

When I was a kid my next door neighbor was the projectionist at the local theater. We used to go up to the projection room to say hello and check it out. They used a high voltage carbon arc to illuminate the screen thru the film, and there was a lot of smoke and heat from it. Sometimes we could see it on the screen, not sure if it was smoke or heat though. I suppose if you were doing some arc welding during a movie in your HT you might notice a difference in the picture....
