I might be able to pick up a cheap 9PG Xtra but the tubes are toasted. How much are new/reconditioned tubes? Or does someone have a set lying around? It looks like it needs all three.

That's why it's cheap..Wink

VDC does rebuild the tubes, but also has new ones at $645 each. Ouch, but the pix is great with new tubes..Wink

rebuilds are $500 each.

That's kinda what I was expecting. I guess I should look around for someone selling slightly used ones. Are they somewhat generic tubes? (hopefully that will increase my chances of finding tubes in somewhat decent used condition).

I currently have a 1272Q that hasn't yet made it to my ceiling mount. Maybe I should just stick with what I have, but I'm pretty sure the 9PG Xtra is a good enough upgrade.

The Xtra uses a green tube that is identical to the XG sets, that's why they are really hard to find. I have a worn blue listed on eBay right now along with toasted greens.

The PG and PG+ tubes will not fit the Xtra, nor will the R and B tubes from the XG.

I didn't mean to imply a tube swap Smile

The OP hasn't bought the Xtra, so my suggestion was to not buy it, and wait for a machine with good tubes instead (NEC 6PG or better)

I agree, wait for similar grade set with at least decent tubes. It will save you alot of work and money in the long run. The 1272 is still a good projector.

I might be able to get the 9PG Xtra for as little as $50, still not worth it?

You could probably sell the lenses for at least $100-150.

For $50 you could get it now, and have it in wating until you can find tubes for it. OR, if you find a better projector in the meantime, part it out or resell it to someone who needs it, you'll make your money back.

I'd take it and sit on it, wait for tubes to pop up and buy a Sony 12xx series in the mean time.

I have a 1272 with what appear to be decent tubes, but I haven't checked their hours yet.
I figure if I can get the Xtra for $50 its probably worth it to sit on it and try and catch some cheap used tubes.

If you already have a 1272, there's no need to rush, but, I'd buy the Xtra (for $50 why not?), learn the ropes and keep an eye out for another EM machine (NEC PG/XG, Marquee, G70, Barco 808 or higher).

Beware you need a remote, and they are $100.

The price of the tubes from VDC is more than a minty Xtra is worth these days, you really do have to find a set with good tubes.

The asking price is $100. I was hoping to get it for $50, as its quite a drive from my location and the tubes are toasted. It does come with the manual and the remote, so thats a bonus.

If it is going to be a long drive or extra work to get, I would still say it is better to just wait it out for one close by. Good deals pop up every once and awhile.

I would buy it for that. As others have mentioned, the other components alone are worth more than $50. Then again, I have a plain 6PG with a burned green and no remote and I can't give it away. I was thinking of pulling out the red and green to see if the parts alone would generate any interest.
