This may be of help, however, whatever you do DO NOT do the EEPROM initialisation - you will trash your XG unless you really, really know what you are doing!

http://www.curtpalme.com/NECXG.shtm and http://www.jrobbo.com/NEC/index.html and finally, probably the most comprehensive set of information you'll need - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=728595#post728595 .

You might also want to do a search over at the CRT projector forum at WWW.AVSForum.com as well as Curt's forum here.

It may all seem a bit daunting at first but you'll get to grips with the XG pretty quickly. Just don't jump in too deep too soon!

CTRL + NORMAL, then pick CANCEL, then ENTER. Will zero all settings for a menu level and all sub menus.

If you do ALIGNMENT, CONVERGENCE and FOCUS the whole projector is done.

To centre the crosshairs you need to be in SERVICE MODE then pick RASTER CENTERING. Do a search, here or AVS on Raster Centering.

Read this (a sticky at the top of this form BTW):

Do you mean that once you zero those you are done or do you mean that if you zero those your projector is done aka trashed?

I know I had zeroed along time ago but I have never done a good setup from scratch and was thinking about redoing it.

but I have watchable picture on it. But where a lot of texture to it compared
to the sony. But the hd looks ok. I'm using my direct tv hd box for the source. Is that alright?

We don't set Sharpness as it doesn't work with a RGBHV input (or a HDMI/DVI input board which mimics a RGBHV input board as far as the projector is concerned.

DON'T use S-video or Composite.

Ahh, you must have an 852 or 1352.

I didn't know Sharpness worked for component, mine doesn't accept it.

I would leave it at 50, at a guess.

Brightness somewhere between 0 and 100, contrast somewhere between 40 and 70 usually.

I have a 852 its just the picture doesn't look smooth if you know what I mean. I just replace a sony-d50 and it looked
very film like and the nec does not. Does that make any sense to you? and thank you for all your help too Mark.

Ok gotcha now. Sorry about the BoomHauer post but I found that just minutes before and I had to post it. Very Happy

What you may be seeing is the increase in resolution of the NEC over the D50. The NEC uses EM tubes, which are sharper and stay sharp for the life of the tube (10 000 hours or so ). Where as the D50 uses ES tubes which get softer as they age. By 10 000 hours they will be pretty soft.

You've also gone from a 7" set to an 8" set and the 8" tubes can just show more detail.

Work on focus both optical and electronic. I spent about 3 hours on mine last night and saw a nice improvement over my last attempt. CRT tweaking is like playing an instrument, the more you play the better you get at it. That's one thing I'm enjoying about CRT. Some days I think I want to get a digital and just watch movies. Other days I enjoy the tweaking and the knowledge that the picture can get better and better. It all depends on how much time you are willing to invest.

The XG should blow away the Sony in all aspects. It's possible you have a fault in the NEC, whether user created or set created. If someone got into the set before you got it and tweaked controls, then it could be really messed up. Pictures of the crosshatch, focus H pattern (only take a pix of one tube at a time) will show us lots.
